| karahtalia's Full Review: Prilosec OTC Acid Reducer, Delayed-Release Tablets |
I did not get heartburn till I had my first child, after that I seemed to get it on a regular basis if I did not eat regular meals. I did not really pay it any mind as I do not typically take medications for things unless directed by a doctor.
So I went in for a doctor's appointment due to a persistent cough that would not go away. She decided that a possible cause could be acid reflux that has managed to irritate the lining of my throat, thereby causing the constant tickle that was bothering me so. Her diagnosis was to try Prilosec for 2 weeks and see if that would solve the problem.
Amazingly after around 10 days I quit coughing and the persistent heartburn I ignored all the time was gone. This medication is extremely effective in treating heartburn.
My word to the wise, however, is to talk with your physician first instead of treating and running, the reason for this is because there could be more serious underlying conditions that should be monitored or treated differently and just easing the heartburn by shutting down some of the acid producing pumps in your stomach isn't going to fix it.
This leads me to my discussion of how Prilosec works. It reduces your stomach's ability to make excess acid, which is what causes the heartburn. The way it manages this is different than say Tums or Rolaids which coats your stomach lining like a layer of lip balm protects your lips. This means the relief will not be instant and it will take a day or so before you notice real results.
The idea of this medication is to take it every day for 2 weeks, this allows your damaged stomach lining to heal. It does a very good job of this and makes it definitely worth the money you pay for it, in my opinion.
It isn't the cheapest thing on the market but it is effective and therefore worth what you spend for it. You can save money purchasing it by going to some of those warehouse type places such as Sam's Club and buying in bulk. You can save money per pill this way even though you spend more all at once. The other option is to look for coupons. Sometimes Prilosec's website carries print off coupons and/or rebates.
For those who are not aware (who don't watch television) Prilosec is in pill form, meaning you take it with a glass of water or something similar, it is not a chewable tablet.
The directions for taking this medication is to take one pill with water in the morning every day for 14 days. After 14 days it is recommended to wait another 4 months before taking Prilosec again, unless directed otherwise by your physician. This medication is geared toward those 18 and older so a doctor should be consulted if you have a child with frequent heartburn.
As with all medications there is always a chance of an allergic reaction and/or undesirable interactions between other drugs you currently take. If you are allergic to omeprazole do not take this. Also consult your doctor if you take such drugs as warfarin, diazepam, digoxin, and prescription antifungal or anti-yeast medicines.
I still take Prilosec daily and since have had no trouble with heartburn or the coughing associated with it. For that reason I do recommend the medicine.
