Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
My 3 year old daughter is a girly-girl who loves all things pink, princess, and ballet. The Prima Princessa DVD recently found its way into our home and quickly became her absolute favorite. My daughter isn't a video kid. We have tons of DVDs and she rarely, actually pretty much never - prior to now, asks to put on a movie. Prima Princessa, another story. It's Prima Princessa.. every day - and multiple times if she had her wish.
About Prima Princessa Prima Princessa was created by 2 jersey moms, Stephanie Troeller and Mary Kate Mellow, with girls who love dance. The idea was born because their girls loves dancing and enjoyed watching ballet but couldn't find kid-friendly ballet movies. Prima Princessa takes real live performances of Swan Lake by the Paris Opera Ballet and cuts them down to 4 short 5minute or so acts with age appropriate narration. In between the Swan Lake acts the 'intermissions' are made up of little girls dressed in tutus doing turns, jumps and having a great time. An animated fairy princess, Prima Princessa, brings the movie back and forth from Baby Einstein-like intermissions to the Swan Lake performance. The movie runs for 40 minutes and can be purchased for under $20 (from Amazon or directly from Prima Princessa).
Our Prima Princessa Experience My 3 1/2 year old daughter absolutely loves this DVD. I honestly was skeptical that she would be able to have enough patience to watch the Paris Ballet performances but I was so very wrong. She is absolutely mesmerized when Swan Lake is being performed and understands the story as it is narrated. The performances last for only about 5 minutes or so which is good for a pre-K or early elementary age child to watch without losing interest.
The intermission segments remind me a bit of Baby Einstein movies that feature real kids, toys, lots of music, fast paced. She more than loves the intermissions which have little ballerinas just like her dancing around in very foofy tutus - the pirouette segment is the most priceless one. My daughter dances right along with the girls and loves to get on a leotard, tutu and slippers when she watches this.
I love that Prima Princessa encourages active participation and isn't a "veg out" movie like many kids movies can be. Prima Princessa is absolutely the perfect movie for any little girl who loves to dance and a great way to introduce your little one to a real live Ballet performance. My only wish right now is if they would come out with a series or other Ballets. Swan Lake is great but I think I've memorized it and am ready for something new - Nutcracker for the holidays, maybe?
Looking for the perfect gift for a little girl who loves to dance, get Prima Princessa.
