Pros:No animal testing, no animal ingredients, no surfactants, or other controversial ingredients.
Cons:Not particularly moisturizing. Blue background will stain! Sometimes pieces of the mosaic break apart.
The Bottom Line: Yes, Primal Elements Midnight soap bars are effective, gentle cleansers with highly concentrated scent.
Ever since I spied Primal Elements unique soap bars in a boutique years ago, I've been hooked! I'm not sure which I like more; the stained glass/mosaic tile appearance, or the vast selection of rich scents.

As much as I love Primal Elements soap bars, my interest waxes and wanes simply because of the inconvenience of storing a soap "bar". Liquid soaps are much more tidy and less wasteful. Adding to the inconvenience are the unwieldy dimensions of Primal Elements bars which are really too big to handle easily until the soap has been downsized from use. The bars weigh in at a hefty 6.8 ounces each, so when you drop a bar because it's so big and slippery, you know it!
Last month I decided to purchase this two pack of Midnight Moon for $15.90. The fragrance description appealed to my current obsession for warm, wintry scents. Patchouli is the predominant note and Primal Elements mentions spices, oakmoss, and exotic woods. I smell patchouli which is like saying I smell vanilla --- so many interpretations! Perhaps the exotic woods refers to sandalwood because I think I detect it, and as a result, Midnight Moon is a little sharper than I'd like. (my favorite patchouli scent is made by Yankee Candle around Halloween) It smells slightly more masculine than feminine or even unisex. Definitely not a girly scent.
My Primal Elements Midnight Moon bars look slightly different than the image attached to this product ID. Same deep blue background, creamy white crescent moon, but the moon is surrounded by glittery white five point stars. I love the look of these bars and could easily be influenced by a design almost as much as a scent. Each scent has a corresponding "scene" which may or may not be a literal interpretation of the fragrance.
WARNING: The deep blue background of Midnight Madness will stain light colored washcloths or nylon sponges. I was careless enough to use a white washcloth and no amount of detergent, stain remover, bleach, or muscle, will completely remove the dye. Thankfully, I have a stash of cheap white cotton washcloths from IKEA.
It's been awhile since I last used Primal Elements soap bars, so I was surprised at how quickly the bar shrinks! I anticipated a hard milled soap that lasts, but in all fairness it is made from vegetable glycerin so that's my miscalculation. Midnight Madness almost melts at the touch. Primal Elements proves that you don't need to add potentially irritating surfactants like SLS because the soap produces plenty of suds. I like to go old school with a bar of soap and use a washcloth, but it will lather up just as well with a nylon sponge. My bathroom is filled with scent that lingers, amplified by the humidity, that lasts longer than it lingers on my towel dried skin. Although the soap rinses easily, my skin feels a teeny bit filmy. The lotion I always slather on after a shower as part of my routine, is more of a necessity with Midnight Moon. It doesn't dry my skin, but isn't exceptionally hydrating either.
For the sole reason that the scent didn't appeal to me as much as I thought, I won't repurchase Midnight Moon. On the other hand, my other picky complaints aren't enough to dissuade me from repurchasing scents that I know I love or other scents that interest me. If you do purchase, invest in a great soap dish to preserve as much of the product as is possible --- I use a deeply ribbed heavy glass soap dish. I definitely recommend Midnight Moon if you're crazy about patchouli or if not, any of Primal Elements other fantastic scents. Made with vegetable glycerin, fragrance oils, and mineral pigments, this soap is about as pure as it gets! It's a great choice for Vegans, or anyone who is concerned about the list of ingredients many personal products contain.
