| coresponger's Full Review: Daniel Goleman, Annie McKee, Richard E. Boyatzis -... |
For those looking to help develop their leadership skills for career purposes I would definitely recommend picking up this book. This book is based on the work of Daniel Goleman in the field of Emotional Intelligence(EI). Using EI, Goleman evaluates different managers, leaders, and future leaders in various sectors of business to determine which qualities of EI are present in great leaders.
After comparing the different EI attributes that Goleman finds in these people, he goes on to explain how these skills manifest themselves in each of the 6 different leadership styles that he suggests are present today in the business world. He explains how an individual does not necessarily have the requisite EI attributes to master each of the leadership styles, but that often only several of the leadership styles is needed to be an effective and respected leader. He further breaks down how the different styles play out in different settings, and which styles are most effective in achieving goals.
I found this book to be excellent reading. It requires a great deal of introspection, to allow one to fully recognize what EI attributes one possesses and what attributes one needs to work harder on developing. The book inserts various small "real life stories" to help bring the message home so to speak. The book is well laid-out, flowing clearly from one topic to another, giving the reader the necessary background early on the understand the later discussions of more involved topics. The only downfall of the book, in my opinion, is that the message gets a somewhat repetitive by the end of the book. The book probably would have been better had it been briefer, however given the academic nature of Goleman and his co-authors the verbosity is easily understood.
