| chelledun's Full Review: Primeval Whirl |
Primeval Whirl is located in a subsection of Dino-Land called Hester and Lesters Dino-Rama. This is one of the newest attractions at the Animal Kingdom, and quite possibly my least favorite. Let me tell you about it
Theming
Hester and Lesters Dino-Rama is a new area of the park. It has a fun, bright feel which is kind of reminiscent of an old-fashioned carnival or theme park. There are several other attractions in this area, including a variety of carnival games and Triceratops Spin, a childrens ride reminiscent of Dumbo. The Primeval Whirl basically looks like a carnival type ride full of Dinosaurs. The theming isnt nearly as elaborate as most of the others in the park. You can see the cars dip and spin among brightly colored cut-outs of dinosaurs. The waiting area takes guests through a series of mirrors, reminiscent of a fun house atmosphere. The right is bright to look at, but nothing too special aesthetically and some people in my family found it very tacky.
Snuggle With Your Neighbor!
The seating on this attraction is very, very cozy. Guests are loaded into brightly colored round cars with four bucket seats on the back side. The two bucket seats on each side share a bar that comes down around ones shoulders. My family is not that large, and we felt very cramped. This closeness is probably nice for parents riding with children who wish to hold on to them. We did notice that the park employees did not load two people from different parties onto the same side of the car, so no one had to snuggle with some one they didnt know, at least.
Hold Onto Your Lunch
The actual ride is a combination of a Tilt-A-Whirl and a minor roller coaster. Your car goes through a series of turns and dips, generally heading in a downward direction. At the same time, it spins back and forth in a random direction. After some observation, I suspect cars with more weight in them spin more. Generally, this experience allows one to see how a pinball might feel in a machine. If you love the tilt-a-whirl or go on the spinning teacups twelve consecutive times, you will love this ride. The ride is not really that smooth, and tends to jerk you around some.
I would like to first state that I am not that much of a wimp really, when it comes to scary rides at amusement parks. I have ridden most of the roller coasters at Six Flags and all of the wild rides at Disney with very little problem. However, I am not so good with the spinning things, and this ride made me SICK. I had to sit down afterwords! The height requirement for this ride is 48, which made me feel better than if I had gotten ill on a ride intended for very young children. My sister loved it and was not bothered at all by the spinning, while my parents said they could tolerate it but did not wish to ride again, probably ever.
You May Have to Wait
Although this is far from the main attraction at the Animal Kingdom, it loads veeeery slowly. We road it immediately after Kilimanjaro Safari and Dinosaur, two of the parks biggest draws. Although the line was very short, our wait was still almost ten minutes because there are not many cars in operation and the line moves very slowly. We did notice that there are two identical sides of this ride available, but only one was in operation the day we visited.
We rode this ride so early in the day because it was the only new attraction since our last visit, and therefore a high priority. However, if you visit later in the day, FASTPASS is available. Using this system, you can insert your ticket and receive a pass with a set one hour increment of time, which allows you to enter through a much shorter line during that set time. Keep in mind you may only hold one fast pass at a given time, so plan accordingly.
Overall..
In comparison with other Disney Attractions, this ride is not particularly creative or memorable. It is basically a filler attraction I think, to complement the major Dinosaur attraction in the next pavilion. I will not be riding this attraction again, partly because it makes me sick but also because it loads so slowly and is basically a carnival type ride. My recommendation? Ride this if you have time, love to spin, or are determined to experience every attraction at the Animal Kingdom.
