Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie''s plot.
I love seeing Disney Channel Original Movies, but lately they have not been all that great, especially Hatching Pete. I still really like seeing the new movies when the premiere on the Disney Channel and I was not able to see Princess Protection Program when it aired on the Disney Channel last week due to being on a road trip. Since the earliest I could perhaps catch it on television is August I decided to just go ahead and purchase it on DVD, as it really sounded like an interesting plot. I was not disappointed in my purchase, although if I had seen it on television I do not think it would be a must have DVD.
Disney has done plenty of Princess movies, but this one stands out as unique and not quite princessy kind of like the Princess Diaries ones (more so the first than the second of that series). I am not that much into the really princessy stuff, but the ones that make them seem like real humans like real princesses are and not just fairy tale ideals are good in my opinion. This one takes an unique spin on it with the princess being put into a protection program (similar to Witness Protection Program, but for Princesses). The other reason I enjoyed it was that it really was not just about the real princess, but the princess in everyone or at least every girl.
The main plot is about a single dad Joe Mason being an agent in the PPP (Princess Protection Program). Early in the movie he goes off on a mission and ends up coming home with a princess (Princess Rosalinda/Rosie). His daughter, Carter, is upset about having to deal with living with the princess and has her prejudices about princesses that at first seem real. Slowly Rosie learns how to be a normal teenage girl and at the same time Carter learns about the princess inside her all while becoming best friends forever.
Overall a great movie, but as for a DVD release I was kind of disappointed in the special features. There are only two short featurettes and one music video (“One and the Same”). One featurette is called “Royal & Loyal BFFs,” which is mostly about the cast becoming fast friends on the set. The other is called “Royal Reality” and is a real princess telling about what it is like to be a princess. Personally I would have liked to see an audio commentary on this, but then again I did not expect it since I have never seen one on a kids/teens release except VeggieTales.
