teamsporttrac's Full Review: Princeton Tec Aurora Headlamp
I was tired of constantly replacing the batteries in my Princeton Tec Quest headlamp that utlizes a traditional light bulb. So I began looking for a functional, inexpensive LED headlamp. After some looking around I chose the Aurora. It was a great deal at under $30, and included batteries, plus the Princeton Tec Pulsar light as an added bonus.
The LEDs in the headlamp are super bright and put out a much more cleaner "whiter" light than traditional bulbs. Plus the LEDs should never need to be replaced and batteries should last me much much longer than with my other headlamp.
I mainly use the headlamp for hunting (during dark hours before sunrise and after sunset). However I have found many uses for the headlamp around the house and for other projects that require both hands (i.e. automotive applications).
The light has five modes of operation: High, Medium, Low, Slow Blink, and Fast Blink. One example of when I found the blinking modes are useful is when I arrived at a hunting location before my buddies showed-up. There were other hunters with other lights there, but I set my light on strobe and my buddies were able to identify me from across the field.
The lamp tilts and can be pointed almost straight-down (when not wearing a hat with a bill). I also like that the strap is headband style and has no uncomfortable middle strap that goes over the top of your head.
While using the headlamp during hunting, I have found two things that I would change. Firstly, the button on top of the light is made of flexible rubber and can be difficult to depress at times - especially when wearing gloves. A hard switch that slides would be a nice upgrade. Secondly, the light is so low-profile, that the light output is hindered when wearing a hat with a bill. My Quest headlamp stuck out a bit further and therefore provided more immediate light below, while wearing a hat with a bill. I wish the Quest could reach-out and shine light below the hat's bill.
