Really the title should be enough to ensure you RUN AWAY from this machine. I purchased it at Sears back in July 2003 for about $400. I also opted for the extended 3 year warranty (very very glad I did) for an extra $70.
I use this thing religiously, when it's working. Probably spend 30 minutes a day, 7 days a week, and my wife uses it for 15-20 minutes a day, 3-5 times a week.
It's fairly unstable and within 2 weeks of getting it home, it started squeaking (LOUD). If you were moving on it at a fast rate, the cycles (1-2) ocurring about every second, you couldn't hear the television from 10 feet away, on high volume.
Then it broke at the 2 month stage (the flywheel). I was so very tempted to just return it to Sears but since I had spent the time hauling it into our basement and assembling it, I just decided to keep it. Plus I was getting good results from using the machine (lost about 100 lbs. in 6 months) but I was also cutting back on the food. Burn less than you consume and you'll lose weight. Anyway, we scheduled the repair, took a week for them to come out and see what the problem was. Took another week to get the parts and another week to schedule the repair visit. So we were down 3 weeks without the machine. I wasn't very happy but at least I had my working machine back.
All was well for a few months and then it broke again, same thing, flywheel. The second break happened sometime in December, so about 5 months after purchase, 3 months since last repair. I go through the same thing again with Sears, takes 3 weeks and it's back to working again.
By this time I had already reached my weight loss goal so I cut back on my use of the elliptical. Within a few months, May time frame, it broke again, yep, you guessed it, flywheel. It's obviously a bad design, faulty or something. Go through the same routine with Sears, 3 weeks and it's finally fixed.
To beat it all, the same repair guy has been the one to come out each time and just knows what to order. These things must break constantly. I seriously can't believe Sears continues to sell the warranty knowing the trouble they have from these.
ICON fitness, which makes just about every home brand of equipment out there, uses a lot of the same parts for all the different brands. I'd steer clear of anything they make.
