ProCure Borax Egg and Bait Cure
This is a fairly new product. Not too many years ago the Salmon fisherman made their own various cures for roe. The different cures have for the most part, used 20 Mule Team Borax. The fisherman would add all sorts of other concoctions to the Borax such as; salt, sugar, food colors and Jell -O. Some of them also used scents and would add tuna, shrimp or albacore. Pro Cure has made it easier for the Salmon and Steelhead fisherman. ProCure already comes in a variety of colors and already has the right mixture of salt, sugar and Borax.
What ProCure Borax Egg and Bait Cure does is retain the moister inside the eggs while keeping them film. Once the eggs are clean and dry, you fillet the egg skein right down the center. Apply a generous coat to both sides of the ProCure to the raw roe. Keep the roe in a zip lock bag and place the roe in the refrigerator. Turn the roe every eight hours for two days. Now you have cured roe for next year. This saves you a lot of money if you fish for Salmon very often. Make sure that your roe has no blood in it when you cure it. The roe should also be clean and dry. After you have cured the roe for two days, you can freeze it. Take the roe out of the freezer the night before you go fishing. It thaws out fairly fast. I take the roe out of the freezer and make my roe and Tuna balls, (with netting & Stretchy Thread ) the night prior to my fishing trip.
Final Thoughts
ProCure Borax Egg and Bait Cure is a very good cure. Its easy to use when compared to making a cure yourself. It can be difficult to get a mixture just right when you are tying to make your own. Getting the color and firmness just right can be tough. There is no need to go and buy salt, sugar or Raspberry Jell -O anymore. The ProCure Borax Egg and Bait Cure takes most of the work out of this process. The colors are just right as well as the amounts of salt and sugar. Only use roe from a hatchery hen. If you catch a wild hen, put her back! This roe needs to stay in the wild to ensure the future of wild Steelhead. Hatchery fish will have a notched or missing dorsal / adipose fin. This way, our children and theirs will have wild Steelhead in the future. I would recommend ProCure Borax Egg and Bait Cure to any Salmon or Steelhead fisherman. Its a great product!
