Pros: No grains or fillers, chunks of real fish, fish is first listed ingredient
Cons: No listing of ash or magnesium levels
The Bottom Line: One drawback - no listing of ash and magnesium levels. A real fish, skin and bones, no fillers or grains, food. My cats love it, yours may too.

| patriciak's Full Review: Pro Plan Ocean Fish with Salmon Canned Food for Ca... |
I like foods that have ingredients I can pronounce and recognize without consulting a chemistry book; and that is what I prefer feeding to my cats as well. This is the second fish based food by Pro Plan that I tested with my cats, in an ongoing search for a healthy canned cat food that my cats would eat.
Pro Plan Ocean Fish with Salmon in Shrimp Jelly
The only can size available is a 5.5 oz. can featuring a convenient pop-top lid that is easy to peel back and open (unlike some brands where the pop-top lid is a heavier metal and very stiff, easy to cut your fingers on while wrestling with it).
The Label Claims
Highlighted points on the label are that this food is "rich in Omega Fatty Acids with Taurine" and that "Real Fish is the #1 Ingredient. There is no money-back guarantee nor is "Satisfaction 100% Guaranteed".
The description of the food emphasizes that it is different than other brands of Super-Premium canned foods, and notes that there are no grains or fillers used. A true Claim that I appreciate. Pro Plan Ocean Fish with Salmon in Shrimp Jelly is formulated to the standards of the AAFCO Nutrient Profile for the maintenance of adult cats - this is not a food formulated as the sole food for kittens.
The Can is Opened and Reveals
A heavenly smell of salmon! I was very surprised to actually like the smell of this canned cat food. Before removing the food from the can, one can see large chunks of ocean fish (pilchard)with skin on, resting in an opaque jelly. Upon removal to a dish, one can see the bones of the chunked fish, soft wedges of pink salmon meat, and will find a lovely, warm tan jelly coating and accenting the fish. No thick white layer of fat is seen, the dish is fish, plain and simple.
But will They eat it?
They may - mine do. Cats are so individual in their tastes, even cats that have made their preferences for fish clear, may decide they do not like this food. I'd suggest trying just one can.
Patrick, my 15 year old I love to lick off the shrimp jelly, and I like the softer salmon meat.
Tyler, who is being encouraged to gain weight Don't come near my fish! My fish! Yum!
All others who were offered a taste Universal sound of quiet except for eating slurps or soft growling refusals to share.

Final Thoughts
I admire a food that is plain and simple what it purports to be - a canned fish product whose first ingredient is fish, and whose contents contain recognizable chunks of fish with skin and bone. I appreciate a food that contains none of the preservatives that I do not choose to feed my cats - BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin, and I appreciate that this food does not contain various grains and fillers that my cat may not be able to even digest (did you know that rice is a utilizable grain for your cat? did you know that some foods, in an effort to decrease calories/be "lite", include undigestible peanut hulls?).
My cats find this very palatable - perhaps because of the shrimp jelly, or perhaps they appreciate the "real" skin on their fish, and the crunch of the bones.
I am surprised that the food does not list the ash or magnesium content, and it is one reason I would not feed this on a regular basis, but rather as an occasional, quality treat. I give this 1 and a half thumbs up, my cats give it all 4 paws up and a wave of their tails to accentuate how much they like it.
