Aussie Cleanse and Mend Shampoo Can Wash My Hair Every Day
Written: Sep 02 '08 (Updated Sep 02 '08)
Product Rating:
Pros: Cleans without stripping, mends without oiling up hair, rinses thoroughly, reasonably priced
Cons: bottle difficult to snap shut, uses both Ammonium Laureth Sulfate and Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
The Bottom Line: This shampoo cleans, helps with my hair-control needs while not greasing. It's well worth a trial tun in your shower/bath as long as you have no problem with laryl/laureth sulfates.
As a father of five children, and even before any children, hairstyle is low on the priority list. But married to a woman and being a father of 4 out of five children who are girls made me dare I say sensitive to the varied hair needs of others in my home. Since I love to shop and cook I also am the one to end the grocery shopping day with a trip to the HBA department. It was here in the matter of cheap shampoo purchases that until recently I showed my insensitivity. I bought what was fewer than two dollars reasoning that if it stripped my oiled up hair every day it would be good for my kids. I was chest deep in deNile regarding my flyaway, and my kids suffered in silence. Bad Daddy!
My wife’s pretty naturally curly hair demanded more expensive conditioning products that if I used would result in my fine oily hair hanging down so straight you’d thought I’d played in a "ZZ Top" cover band. Enter the scientific analysis of my then eight-year-old curly haired third child and her first prize winning science fair experiment comparing conditioners with various hair types. Top on the list in the conditioning without 20W50ing hair was Aussie Conditioner. I applauded the results, celebrated her first place with everyone at the “Asiana Buffet”, and never thought I’d use an Aussie product…until now.
The flyaway stripped hair my students at North Greenville University chuckled at led to a stark midlife realization. Hormonal or not, I need something with a little conditioner rather than the HRT treatment that could have left me singing in a Heart cover band. Into my life and my shower comes "Aussie Cleanse and Mend Shampoo".
The 13.5oz. purple bottle latches at the top with but is difficult to snap back down. Though the price is more than twice White Rain or Suave, there is less price difference in the 33.8oz. model. To a long time Oily-Hair (OH) guy like me, the initial white colored shampoo strikes fear into the palm as post-shower visions of itchy-dry Crisco head dance…well, in your head. But I can assure you OHs that "Aussie Cleanse and Mend Shampoo" ungreasily lathers into your scalp and equally easily rinses. Not only does it rinse well in my hair, but also it doesn’t leave that laminating feeling on my scalp. The scent is clean, fruity, mildly Aboriginal. Kidding about the Aboriginal but I wasn’t sure how to work that in. However, the scent is not male or female it’s merely pleasant yet not perfuming throughout your workday. This proved important to me as I once shampooed with the OH dreaded Head and Shoulders 2n1. Just writing this triggers olfactory trauma-based memories of sweating in the hot sun and the Head and Shoulders 2n1 scent and feel regenerating like a fruity-smelling "Tribble" on my head. The conditioner residue itching left me Monk-like eager to scrub my hair with a Greased Lightning/Ivory Soap mixture. Not so with "Aussie Cleanse and Mend Shampoo".
The next feature to me was the reduced flyaway. Though my emotions wildly vary, the position of what’s left of my hair has a reduced range of “Mad Scientist”. Ironically, my curly haired sweetie uses Aussie Cleanse and Mend Shampoo even above the super-conditioning "Aussie Moist Shampoo". I buy that for three out of the four daughters in need Biblical proportioned hair mending. Though my ends drip rather than split, my wife’s curly ends really mend.
"Aussie Cleanse and Mend Shampoo" runs around three dollars for the 13.5oz. Aussie coupons are frequently available in the $1.00 off to $2.00/buy two Aussie product ranges. Other Aussie products of note that the females in my world rank highly are the 3-Minute Miracle and Aussie’s hairspray. I will not be writing a full epinion about those as I make it a habit to only write about products and services I actually use. However, I have coupons, and though not afraid to use them, I buy "Aussie Cleanse and Mend Shampoo" with of without them.
Lastly, there will not be an ingredient list in this epinion. My trusted epinion colleague elzora beat me to it and I strongly suggest reading her well-written article. However, of note, this product has the dreaded Ammonium Laureth Sulfate AND Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate. There is some clinical evidence that long-term, sit-it-on-your-skin-for-long-period-of-time exposure can cause skin irritation, immune suppression, and tumor enhancing. Only one warned of a POSSIBLE link to these and the chemical cousins Sodium Lauryl Sulfate building up in internal organ tissue. However, researchers warned that rinsing off these chemicals that help soap cleanse and lather on the shower or bath greatly diminish the POSSIBILY of harm. However, for me, in terms of skin irritation, "Aussie Cleanse and Mend" was gentle and non-irritating yet just writing about it makes me think my head itches so let’s stop here.
