Procter & Silex Auto Drip Coffee Maker Saves The Day
Written: Feb 23 '02 (Updated Feb 23 '02)
Pros:built to last with 24/7 use and abuse, affordable
Cons:hard to deep clean inside
The Bottom Line: For the price, and for die hard coffee addicts, this is a really good system.
I hate to admit it but both my hubby and I are addicts. Yes, we are addicted to Brazil's most exported item, Coffee.
Because we both drink coffee on a 24/7 basis (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) we need a coffee pot that can stand up to this use. And the occasional abuse, when someone forgets to turn the pot off.
The Past
In the past, we were both diehard Mr. Coffee coffee maker fans. Unfortunately, the Mr Coffee brand did not feel the same about us. We were constantly having to replace the coffee making system every 4-6 months. Mr Coffee could not that the use and abuse of two coffee addicts.
After a very scarey day, in which Mr Coffee had puttered out the next day, both hubby and I rushed to KMart to find a suitable replacement.
Our criteria was simple.
*An inexpensive system that will hold up
*A system that offers a removable filter attachment
*A pot that holds more than 8 cups of coffee
What we found was the Proctor & Silex Auto Drip Coffee Maker A607 on sale for 19.99.
The System
The Proctor & Silex A607 was inexpensively priced at $19.99.
This system does offer a removable filter attachment so that instead of running across the kitchen with a wet, gooey paper filter to the trash can, I can now just take the whole filter attachment and dump the mess easily and less messily into the trash.
Also this system holds up to 12 cups of coffee, and the markings for the cup amounts are clearly marked on the side of the carafe. Each mark represents 2 cups.
I have even found, that the old Mr Coffee carafe will work with this system when I dropped our Proctor & Silex carafe. But the Proctor & Silex carafe does work better due to the heigth of the carafe.
But does it hold up?
As I said before we have had this system for almost 2 years. The coffee system is on at least 20 out of a 24 hour day. And on a rare occasionally it will be on the whole 24 hours, when we forget to turn it off.
In fact the only problem we have had with this system is it is difficult to clean the inside. I have run bleach through and hubby has run dish detergent through at different times.
Still the inside looks not as clean as it should.
In the future, I plan to purchase cleaner specifically for cleaning the insides of coffee systems.
Bells & Whistles
Because this system was only $19.99, it does not come with any extras such as a timer or the ability to change the strength of coffee from regular canned to espresso.
The Proctor & Silex Auto Drip Coffee Maker A607 is just a standard coffee maker without all the bells and whistles that make the others so much more expensive.
Still for the long lasting of the system and the convience of the easy removal of used filters and grounds, I believe for the price, this is one of the best systems on the market.
