First, I should tell you why I bought this can opener. It's not that I open loads of cans. The fact is that a hand-crank type portable was just fine for my use. But there was a problem with finding my can opener when I needed it. It seems that every time I wanted to open something, I had mislaid my trusty manual can opener. Once, on my way to the laundromat, I even found the can opener in one of my jeans pockets. So, I decided that I should go ahead and get a basic electric opener--nothing fancy--but one that would be sitting right there in the kitchen when I wanted it.
I found this Proctor-Silex Power Opener Extra Large Tall Can Opener at Target, selling for $9.99. As I said, I don't do a lot of can opening (or cooking, for that matter!!) so it seemed what I needed. It looked pretty good too, with a sleek vertical design and shiny black finish. At first I did not realize that it included a knife sharpener, which is set into the back of the machine. Even better!! I've only used the knife sharpener a few times, but it does a very good job, although it does not sharpen serrated knives.
The cutting blade mechanism removes for quick cleaning and the lid holder folds down out of the way when not in use. There is also hideaway cord storage so that no long electrical cords need to be dangling. The opener can also accommodate all can sizes, even the tall cans that juices are sold in.
Everything considered, this is a great inexpensive basic unit. I have had my Proctor-Silex for about a year and haven't had any problems with it. There is one downside, though. When opening a large or tall can, it is best to pay attention to the unit and hold onto the unit to keep it from tipping over. The can opener is not wider at the base to offset the extra weight of a full can so the weight of one of these large cans can cause major tip-overs if it is not steadied by hand. Still, for $9.99, I could not ask for more. And, best of all, it's right there waiting for me when I need it!
