| amyk49's Full Review: Progressive Flexible Measuring Spoons 5-Piece Set ... |
I've been using ancient measuring spoons circa the 1950's since I can remember. Those measuring spoons were my mother's and somehow I just stuck with ‘em. I saw this set at T.J. Max for a mere $2.99 and bought them on impulse. These are really cool!
~ Product Description Progressive Flexible Measuring Spoons 5 Piece Set GT-3487 includes ¼ tsp., ½ tsp., 1 tsp., 1 tbls., and 2 tbls. measures. What is especially different with this set is that the spoons are magnetic. At the end of the handle of each spoon there is a small magnet embedded inside - you can't see it - but the handles of the spoons stick to each other to keep the set nested, or you can stick the measuring spoons on the fridge, for instance, if you'd like.
The other feature is that the bowls of the spoons are made of a flexible rubber-like material. Generally this is insignificant, except for instance if you're measuring brown sugar and it is packed, you can press on the bottom of the flexible spoon and press it out.
The spoons are made of white plastic, and the bowls of mine are a dark blue. This set also comes in red. The measurement of each spoon is clearly indicated on the handle in both traditional teaspoon/tablespoon measurements and also in metric equivalents.
There is a hole at the end of the handles for hanging storage. The set is not attached together in any way other than the magnets holding the spoons together when they are nested.
These are dishwasher safe. Expect to pay about $5, unless you find a deal, like I did.
~ My Experience Progressive Flexible Measuring Spoons 5 Piece Set is very convenient with the magnetic feature. I was afraid the spoons wouldn't stay together in my (messy) utensil drawer and get lost, but they stay securely nested even when tossed about in the drawer. Depending on your kitchen setup you could attach them to your fridge or other metal surface for storage, but they won't hold nested that way - you need to separate the set and stick up each spoon separately.
I like that the spoons are not fastened together with a ring, like my old set. You can get to any spoon you need easily and conveniently, yet they will stay stuck together for storage. Really cool.
Now the flexible spoon bowl is new to me, and honestly I can't see much advantage, but then I don't do all that much cooking either. If you were measuring butter it would probably make it easier to push out the butter, or brown sugar, as I mentioned already.
These work like most measuring spoons, and you can level them off with a straight edge for perfect measures. They work with liquids, flour, sugar, spices, shortening or butter, anything you need to measure.
One thing, the rubber-like (neoprene maybe?) material of the measuring spoon bowls tends to ever so slightly retain flour and sugar, and some spices. I mean it all comes out of the spoon, but the bowl will remain lightly "dusted" with the flour, for instance. Not that that would put your measurement off or anything, but my old, ancient metal spoons didn't really do that. It rinses off cleanly with water. I don't have a dishwasher, so I wash these by hand, and they clean up easily.
~ Final Thoughts Progressive Flexible Measuring Spoons 5 Piece Set is a nice addition to my cooking tools. I love the magnetic feature which keeps the set together, yet allows easy access to each spoon. The flexible base is innovative, and while I haven't really used it, someday that might be just the ticket to release a harder, stickier substance. These are well made, and a good value. The only tiny con is that the flexible base is not as slick as stainless steel spoons, for instance, and tends to remain dusted with lighter substances such as flour, sugar, or cinnamon.
