About Me: Time for something new.

Progresso Chicken & Herb Dumplings - Makes a meal, for sure!

Written: Oct 26 '10 (Updated Oct 26 '10)
Pros:Definitely filling, nicely seasoned, not too fattening.
Cons:Lots of celery - but it's not their fault I don't like celery.
The Bottom Line: I like a soup that "eats like a meal" and this one definitely succeeds in that regard!

When it comes to soup, I really like mine to be filling.   If the bowl of soup satisfies me like a meal that's great, as far as I'm concerned.  One of the soups I really like is Progresso's Chicken & Herb Dumplings.

This is, indeed, a hearty soup.  With thick broth and plenty of "insides" this soup is definitely a meal, rather than a side dish.

The main attraction in this soup is the dumpling.  There are many kinds of dumplings.  But in this case the dumplings are small balls of cooked dough, made from wheat and durum flour.  The dumplings are white, about 1/2" long, and come in various shapes.  "Blobs of dough" would describe them nicely.  They don't have much taste by themselves, but the broth that they're in is fairly well-seasoned.  So when consumed with just a little bit of the broth on the spoon, you get a nice flavor, and a filling bite.

The second important feature of this soup is the chicken.  These are large pieces of white meat chicken that are quite good.  And there are plenty of them.  The meat is soft, with a nice texture.

The only other major ingredients are carrots (large, soft pieces) and celery (very large pieces).  I'm glad the carrots are so large because you can actually taste them (a complaint I have when soups include tiny slivers of carrots that carry no taste at all).  I'm also glad the celery comes in such large pieces as it makes it easier for this non-fan of celery to pick them out.

Besides the ingredients mentioned, you have a fairly thick, highly-seasoned broth.

Each 18.5 oz. can contains "about 2" servings.  That's how it's listed on the label.  And each serving contains 100 calories and 2.5g of fat.  There's also 1g of fiber, and 650mg of sodium.  Yes, that's a lot of sodium.  But let just point out that Progresso is now making more and more of their soups in lower sodium varieties.  I'm happy to see them do so.  But to be honest, I don't buy them, because the full-sodium varieties taste better to me.  Still, it's nice to see the company trying to make healthier products.

As far as overall taste goes, I like this soup.  It's very well-seasoned.  I don't feel the need to add salt, and definitely no more pepper.  There are plenty of "insides" - I don't even add crackers to this soup!  And, I have to say that when I eat the entire can for lunch, I am definitely satisfied.  I like most of the Progresso soups, and this one is definitely a winner.
