yotaruvegeta's Full Review: Project: Snowblind for PlayStation 2
In a few hours of playing this wonderful little title, you'll realize one thing- this is a wonderful, little title.
What's wonderful about Project Snowblind? Well, what you will notice right off the bat is that after your introductory mission, the main character is refitted with organic enhancements that allow him to have a distinct advantage in battle.
This makes Project Snowblind an X-men-meets-FPS title, and there is no description for how cool that is. Basically, after every level you will have a new ability added to the list of abilities, such as a shield that makes you invulnerable for a period of time, or a bullet-timish ability that allows you to run circles around bad guys while they try to get one shot off on you. You will probably need every ability you have available to you because enemies are rarely scarce, and there are even times when groupings of enemies are much bigger and fierce than you.
With these great abilities, you can use them along with both standard and high-tech tools/weapons. The first few of the weapons are the standard rifle, shotgun and pistol. However, each of these guns have secondary fire, which makes you feel like you have twice the weaponry. Later weapons are from the imagination of the creators and they are meant to take down robots and other futuristic enemies. One of the best tools you can use looks like the Mother of All Needles. You can use it to jack into terminals you find on walls to disable cameras and jack into robots that may cause you harm.
Level after level is fun, because although you have to move from point a-b, you have so many options on how you go about getting there, mostly because of your powers and the ability to find detours which will allow you to escape an overwhelming onslaught. This gives Project Snowblind a strategy component, so you don't just blindly run out into a fight. You can either play it stealthily or use your protective abilities to save your hide if you decide to play RoboRabmo.
Each level is a mission and you are given objectives, such as destroying gun turrets, finding people who have been captured, making it to a safehouse, or just taking out enemies who are posing a threat to the good guys.
The graphics for Snowblind are on-par with any FPS you will play. The details of destroyed areas that are battle-worn are evident everywhere, which makes you feel like you're really in for some nasty business. The enemies and allies are well-detailed and voice work gives them personality. Many of the NPCs on your side of the fight are available for you to speak with, and you will hear the enemies shout and scream as they plot and attack you. You also get to hear the chirps, cracks and robotic din that are characteristic of a futuristic Asian landscape.
Where 'Snowblind' runs thin is in its story. The story is about a future where soldiers can be fitted with enhancements that give them advantage in battle, as well as a second chance on life. The main character becomes one of these soldiers after his attempt at saving a fellow soldier goes bad- and I don't care.
The main character, who wasn't endearing enough to me to merit remembering his name, just doesn't seem like the soldier who is supposed to avert the titular act. He is cool to play as, without a doubt, but he doesn't seem like a character who would be worthy of a sequel or to even be a signature image on a video game messageboard. He doesn't try to be the leader or inspirational, which is probably what the creators were going for, but I want someone who makes a story that much more interesting.
I, Mr. no-FPS, beat this game within about 10 hours, maybe less. With no replay value other than multi-player, I can't recommend Project Snowblind for anything other than a great, great rental or as part of a borrow-fest involving a neighborhood friend. I pray for something more, but right now 'Snowblind' is a project I would not invest in.
