Propel Fitness Water-Bored By Water And Have A Sweet Tooth?

Written: Jun 20 '03 (Updated Aug 06 '03)
Pros:Vitamin enhanced, light fruit flavors; easily available
Cons:Sugar?
The Bottom Line: If you are like me and are bored by water, but need it, give Propel a try. It is a very tasty way to get your needed water intake.

While we are all instructed regularly to drink 8 glasses of water a day, let's face it, plain water is boring, and I've tried time and time again to drink my allotted amount of water. I haven't been able to do it consistently. I have a sweet tooth, and water simply doesn't do it for me. On the other hand, I am swimming, aquajogging, walking several hours a week now, and want to ensure I am sufficiently hydrated. Many years ago I went inner-tubing on the Colorado and became dehydrated and experienced mild exposure. Believe me it wasn't any fun. Anyway, I happened to see Propel in my local grocery store, and decided to give it a try. Though I was impressed that it was made by the Gatorade people, and noticed that it was vitamin enhanced, I really didn't know what to expect.

Packaging:

The 16 ounce plastic container with a comfortable grip, generally is about $.99 and the 24-ounce bottle will run you $1.39. I prefer the smaller bottle as it has a simple screw off top. The larger bottles have a plastic coating you have to remove from the sport top cap, and it can be tricky to get off. I sometimes have to use my teeth (sorry Mom & Dad; I did appreciate the orthodontia). Anyway, the bottles are medium blue and spell out Propel in large white lettering. In smaller print it notes Fitness water, and below that it shows the logo for Gatorade.

The manufacturers claim that Propel is vitamin charged. and is made to quench and nurture active bodies.

Directions for use:

Refrigerate after opening.

Ingredients:

Purified Water, Sucrose Syrup, Citric Acid, Natural Flavors, Sodium Citrate, Potassium Citrate, Sucralose, Vitamin C, Vitamin E Acetate, Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), Calcium Disodium EDTA, Calcium Pantothenate (Vitamin B5), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Acesulfame Potassium, Vitamin B12:

Flavors:

The available flavors currently available are:

*Berry

*Lemon

*Orange

*Black Cherry

and the newest:

*Kiwi-Strawberry

*Peach

My thoughts:

I have tried all of the flavors with the exception of the strawberry-kiwi, and enjoy them all, particularly the lemon and peach. I think they taste great, and no they aren't perfect. They do have 2g of sugar (sucrose sugar), and probably like most products, Propel is exaggerated by the manufacturers. However, it offers what I need, a pleasant way to get down the water that I probably would be avoiding otherwise. They are sweet, not watery tasting with fruit flavoring. If you don't care for sweet flavoring, you won't like this. If water bores you, try Propel. It keeps me hydrated after a lengthy walk, or a swim, or just during hot days. I wouldn't count on it for all the water you require, nor would I assume it contains all the vitamins you need. Enjoy Propel Fitness Water for what it is, a lightly fruity tasting water with some vitamins. There is no caffeine included in the beverage. Please don't use it in lieu of orange juice or the like. However, it is certainly preferable to sodas for you or your kids. I am giving it 4 stars as I really enjoy it, but has its flaws also.
