Obsessing over Garth Nix is a worthy pastime. :) And Lirael is quite possibly the best sequel I've ever seen! This reminds me of how I liked "The Black Company," and book 3 in that trilogy, but book 2 had some problems.
Yeah, I think sequels can be problems, particularly for authors whose first-in-trilogy novels get critical acclaim. I don't know... maybe it makes them sloppy. Or maybe it makes them nervous. Or maybe it just distracts them from the writing. Or maybe there's an inherent difficulty in the middle part of a long story, and most writers would be better off writing two-novel series. Something to think about if any of us ever decide to write a fantasy series, I guess. ;)

... that this isn't quite the caliber of sequel that, say, "Lirael" was, eh? (Just finished Abhorsen, so I'm obsessing over Garth Nix.)
I've just read a great fantasy that gives me great hope for its sequel. After reading your review, I'm wondering if it takes an absolute genius to write a sequel!

Yes, I was rather disappointed. :( I'm hoping the next book will be back up to the caliber of the first!

"Yes, but explain it to me again"??? =:-o
I find my tongue making that involuntary "tsk, tsk" noise, that phrase sounds very badly done. This is certainly not what I hoped for when I read the first book!
