Pros:Easy Open Sides
● Buzz Lightyear and Woody designs
● Inside wetness indicators

Cons:● Not as absorbent as Pampers Easy-Ups

The Bottom Line: The Huggies Pull-Ups Training Pants with Learning Designs certainly have made my life easier, although I don’t think they facilitate toilet training.

Oh, the joys of potty training…. Giving birth was easier than toilet training my boy. I won’t go into woes, suffice to say, my freakishly stubborn child is trained during the day. Now, if I can get him to stay dry at the night, I’ll be a happy camper. Pull-ups came into our lives 2-years ago. Yes folks, that’s right! That isn’t a typo. I said 2-years ago! I’ve learned that children do things at their pace no matter how much we want them at ours. This product has changed over the years, and in my opinion, it’s better today. To be clear, I am reviewing the Huggies Pull-Ups Training Pants with Learning Designs. The reason I specify that is because Kimberly-Clark is distributing a new product called Huggies Pull-Ups Training Pants with Wetness Liner. I’m not certain that pull-ups actually facilitate potty training, although there’s no question that these pants helped to reduce my need for Extra-Strength Tylenol.

Pull-ups are designed to be the last step in the toilet training phase. They pull-up like real underwear, and feel more like cloth. They still make that cute crunchy sound when kids walk, but nothing like diapers. The “training” part of these pants comes with learning how to “pull-up” the pants, and in focusing on the “learning” designs. Wetness indicators are little designs that are placed on the outside of pull-ups, and they fade when wet. They are intended to encourage little ones to see wetness, so they learn the difference between wet, and dry. The new pants have wetness indicators on the inside as well. Purple stars are placed inside at the front of the pant, so when children sit on the potty they see the stars.

Most companies make male and female trainers, which is supposed to offer customized protection to the gender. I haven’t actually tested this claim, as I only have a boy, but I have no reason to doubt it. Huggies Pull-Ups Training Pants with Learning Designs feature Disney Princess for girls, and Disney Toy Story for boys. The girl pants have flower wetness indicators outside, while the boy pants have boots, or planets outside.

Pull-ups have stretchy sides, waist, and legs, which hug the body, and stay on. This brand, like most, help accidents from becoming big messes with leak-guard protection. Thank goodness for that, as I’m not into cleaning pee pee and poo poo’s off the floor all day long. This brand is unique because of the Easy-Open sides. The best way to describe the closure is that they are like Velcro. They literally tear open, and re-seal with ease. Unlike sticky tabs, these re-seal time, and time again. You can literally re-seal them a dozen times, or more.

These training pants are packaged in jumbo packs, mega packs, and economy-sized packs. The amount of pants per package varies depending on the size of pant, and the size of packaging. Following is the current size chart:
2T - 3T = 18 to 34 lbs
3T - 4T = 32 to 40 lbs
4T - 5T = 38 lbs +

Our Experience:
It’s my experience that these types of pants don’t really encourage toilet training. I think it’s mostly due to the absorbency of training pants today. They don’t allow children to feel wet, so why would they be persuaded to use the potty. It’s just like a glorified diaper that pulls up. After 3-months of trying it with big-boy underwear, and trainers, I finally gave into pull-ups. The Huggies brand was my first choice, because Costco carries them in the economy size. My son thinks they are cool because he can pull them up, and push them down by himself.

We had several nighttime disasters, so I picked up a box of Pampers Easy-Ups. They are more absorbent than the Huggies brand; however, the tear-away sides are horrible. When Procter & Gamble introduced the Feel 'n Learn Advanced Trainers I was encouraged, but they were disappointing as well. Therefore, I went back to Huggies, and today they are my brand of choice. We only use these at night now, and I’ve learned to limit my son’s liquid intake. If William’s had an excessive amount of water throughout the day I either double up, or wake him up during the night and have him use the toilet, otherwise I’ll wake up to a soggy bed.

Do the learning designs work? Yes, in fact, they do fade when wet, but I think the outside indicators are insignificant. Children aren’t in the habit of looking down at their crotch. In addition, most kids this age are wearing shorts, or pants; therefore, unless they are walking around in just a pull-up they’re not aware the designs have faded unless they’re told. With the introduction of the star designs on the inside of the pants, my son is able to see them, and he knows if they fade. He’ll tell me in the morning that all his stars are gone. The Toy Story learning designs used to feature glow-in-the-dark wetness indicators. William loved to dance around, and see the planets move before he donned his jammies. He misses the glow-in-the-dark planets, and Woody boots.

Bottom line, I recommend parents wait until little ones show an interest in potty training, and try real underwear first. If they get it, and don’t like the feeling of being wet, then most likely they will train quickly. I think my son had too many life adjustments at one time, which slowed his progress. In addition, once the diapers were finished up I never bought another pack. Under the circumstances, I think I would have been better off waiting on toilet training until he acclimated to the changes. Ultimately real underwear, potty incentive, and lots of patience trained my boy. The Huggies Pull-Ups Training Pants with Learning Designs certainly have made my life easier, although I don’t think they support toilet training per se.
