I'm Not A Fan: Pup-Peroni 50 Calorie Snack Pouches for Dogs

Mar 8, 2008
Review by
Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:Convenient; water-resistant pouches; bite-size pieces; dogs love them

Cons:Ingredients; not cost-effective; wasteful packaging

The Bottom Line: These aren't that great. Just buy a big bag of Pup-Peroni for a lot cheaper, break it into smaller pieces and put it in a sandwich bag instead.

My mom has a 14-year old Yorkie that has been healthy all of his life. When she first got him, we all thought that Purina was the best brand of dog food you could buy. And 14 years ago, maybe it was. I had no clue back then that you could buy dog food in pet stores. He's been eating a steady diet of Purina Dog Chow and Pup-Peroni Lean for most of his life. Now that I have a Boston Terrier that I love like a child and since I have been learning a lot about dog food and treat ingredients, I have a few ingredients in mind that I don't want my baby to eat. Meat by-products is at the top of that list. Unfortunately, the Pup-Peroni 50 Calorie Snack Pouches for Dogs contain that nasty ingredient - and it's listed first in the ingredient listing. I also have a few other reasons why I'm not all that fond of this product. Read on to find out more.

Product Details:

Pup-Peroni 50 Calorie Snack Pouches For Dogs is a box of eight snack pouches. Inside each foil pouch is approximately ten bite-size pieces of Pup-Peroni Lean. The pouches are easy to tear open. They are also waterproof (since they are made of foil) and are easy to toss in your bag and go.

The Pup-Peroni Lean snacks are 90% fat-free and are beef flavor. They are dark brown in color, soft and chewy-ish in texture. They smell like beef jerky.

Each packet is .6 oz. The total weight of the whole box is 4.8 oz.

From the packaging: Introducing the 50 calorie snack pouch from Pup-Peroni, the first treat that takes the guesswork out of indulging your dog! Of course you love to spoil your dog. But you also want him to be healthy. With 50 Calorie Pouches from Pup-Peroni, you can feel confident that you're giving your dog just the right amount of the fresh, 90% lean beef Pup-Peroni taste your dog loves. Indulgent, delicous snacks in easy-to-carry pouches are perfect for a Pup-Friendly World!

The packaging states that a dog should have a maximum of 20% of his daily calorie intake from snacks, and a minimum of 80% from nutritionally balanced food. There is also a chart that states that a small, 5-10 pound dog can have one to one and a half pouches of Pup-Peroni per day, a small-medium dog (10-25 pounds) can have one and a half to three pouches per day, a medium (25-45 pounds) can have three to four and a half pouches per day, a medium-large (45-70 pounds) can have four and a half to six pouches per day, and a large, 70+ pound dog can have six PLUS pouches per day.

Ingredients (taken from packaging):

Meat by-products, soy grits, sugar, liver, beef, propylene glycol, salt, garlic powder, caramel color, natural smoke flavor, potassium sorbate (used as a preservative), sodium nitrite (for color retention), red 40, BHA (used as a preservative), onion extract.

My Experience:

I bought these treats so that I could take a pack with me to my mom's house every time I visit. Her dog loves Pup-Peroni so much, and I love him, so I want to give him a Pup-Peroni treat when I see him. All I have to do is grab a pouch of these, throw it in my purse and head for her house. When I get there, I can just tear open the pouch and give him the little bite-size pieces.

When I first opened a Pup-Peroni 50 Calorie Snack Pouch, the dog had no idea what I was doing or what I was opening. He gets wigged out over the regular bag of Pup-Peroni but hasn't yet learned that his favorite Pup-Peroni treat is also in these little pouches. When I said the word "Pup-Peroni" and showed him what it was, he was in heaven. He absolutely loves Pup-Peroni.

So, we know that the little guy loves the Pup-Peroni 50 Calorie Snack Pouches. That's not even in question. What I realized since I bought these is that...I didn't need to buy these. First off, my mom has Pup-Peroni Lean at her house all the time. Her dog gets one stick of Pup-Peroni every day. So if I want to give him a little snack of Pup-Peroni, all I have to do is get one out of the regular bag of Pup-Peroni and give it to him. I think that the main reason I bought these is because I thought that they were cool and new. I'm a sucker for new things!

Second, the whole "calorie" thing for dogs is a bit silly in my mind. We have fed our Boston Terrier a total of three different foods in the two and a half years we've had him in an attempt to get the perfect food for his sensitive stomach. I can't remember ANY of these foods having the calorie information on the bag. I think that dog foods tend to deal with portion size in terms of cups of food, not calories. So the calorie chart on the back of the Pup-Peroni 50 Calorie Snack Pouches box is unnecessary for me. In addition, it says that if you have a large, 70+ pound dog, you can feed him or her six PLUS pouches per day. Six? Or more? Are they kidding me? I think that's excessive for any dog. Why would ANY dog, no matter how big it is, need SIXTY or more little pieces of Pup-Peroni every day? I don't think so! That's a lot of animal by-products, salt, artificial coloring, etc. I can't even imagine feeding my 22 pound Boston Terrier up to three pouches of these per day. He doesn't even get one of these because of the ingredients, but if I did feed these to him, he'd get one pouch per day MAX.

One other thing that bugs me about this product is the excessive packaging. I understand that taking a pouch of these on the go is convenient. I probably can be OK with that overall - but isn't it more cost-effective and perhaps a bit less wasteful to just buy a bigger bag of Pup-Peroni Lean and just put a stick in a sandwich bag that you can later break up into little bite-size pieces to feed your dog? How much time does that really take?

The cost of an eight-pack Pup-Peroni 50 Calorie Snack Pouches was $3.88 at Wal-Mart. That's a bit less than 50 cents per pouch. That's not super-expensive, but it doesn't seem cost-effective to me.

Overall, I like Pup-Peroni as a treat for my mom's dog, but I won't buy it for my own dog. I think that these new 50 Calorie Snack Pouches are OK if you really want to buy them for on-the-go snack feeding to your dog. You probably also aren't an insane, "I'm not feeding my dog that ingredient" wacko like I am. But then again, you probably also have kids and think of your dog as a pet and not a child like I do. So I don't judge others who buy these types of treats for their pets. After all, at 14, my mom's dog has had a steady diet of Pup-Peroni his entire life and he's still going strong.

Price and Purchasing Information:

I found the Pup-Peroni 50 Calorie Snack Pouches at Wal-Mart for $3.88. I have not seen them in other stores yet. I assume that they will be over $4 at most other stores, as Wal-Mart usually has the best prices on everything, including pet products.
