In June of 2000 I wrote a review of Slim-Fast titled, The Worst and Best. At that time I didn't see Pure Protein listed on epinions and I wrote at the end of the review, Now, briefly the perfect bar: Pure Protein by WorldWide Sports Nutrition. At $1.99 a bar it is much more money than Slim-Fast but I wouldnt even put them in the same category in spite of the fact Slim-Fasts manufacturer does!
This bar has 180 calories; 4 grams of fat; 6 grams of carbohydrates and 21 grams of protein! The great news: 1.5 grams of sugar. Hardly a candy bar, definitely a protein bar. The one I bought was peanut butter and was very good. It didnt leave an aftertaste like the Atkins bar and others do. This one I would highly recommend.
The bar I am reviewing now is the White Chocolate Mousse and it has similar properties, which I will get into in a minute. From the website: www.sportnutrition.com:
The first high-protein, low-carbohydrate, low-glycemic bar in the world. This high-protein meal replacement bar has changed the face of sports nutrition forever! Each delicious bar contains 30-34 grams of our patented protein blend and only 9-15 grams of carbohydrate (depending on the flavor). Now available in 8 great flavors: Strawberry Cheesecake, Smores, Lemon Chiffon, Chocolate Deluxe, Peanut Butter, Chewy Chocolate Chip, White Chocolate Mousse and Blueberry Cheesecake.
I have no problem recommending this bar as a meal replacement bar after a workout. If you have read any of my reviews you know I am a personal trainer. I always have a meal replacement shake after my workout but I also always carry a protein bar with me. More often it is Pure Protein because as I said one year ago, it is the best, in my opinion. There are so many on the market that it is hard to know and it does depend on what you want. If you want a candy bar with vitamins, have a Slim-Fast Bar. If you want a nutritious bar that will replace some of what you lost with your workout, then this is it.
With 22,000mg of amino acids and a low glycemic index (As stated on the package from the Glycemic Research Institute) I do believe I am putting a healthy product in my body. I also believe that other than post workout the best snack is food, but if you are in a hurry, or just want something like a bar, try Pure Protein. It is made by WorldWide Nutrition a company founded in 1992 in Utica, NY by Dave McCabe, Worldwide Sport Nutrition is known primarily in the US as the maker of the #1 selling Pure Protein® Bars, the first high-protein, low-carb, low-glycemic nutrition bars on the planet. Now selling in over 30 countries and expanding rapidly, Worldwide has become a major player in the arena of sports nutrition.
The glycemic index is the entry rate of a carbohydrate into the bloodstream. The lower the index, the slower the rate of absorption and the slower the carbohydrate turns to sugar in your body."
As I said above this bar sells for $1.99 give or take, depending on where you buy it. It is .50 grams and is a decent size bar.
It has 190 calories
ז grams of fat. So far so good.
It only has 25 mg of sodium
a whopping 22 grams of protein
㨾 grams of carbohydrates
only 3 grams of sugar. I hope you are aware of how little that sugar amount is compared to any other bar you may have in your house. Go look, Ill wait. Biochem makes an excellent bar that in my book gives Pure Protein a run for its money. I am reviewing Pure Protein though, so Ill stick with that. If you have bars at home (the usual Balance, Power, etc.) I am sure you can see the sugar difference. No one will tell you to consume a lot of sugar to be healthy so why consume it if you can help it? If you have a choice between Balance Bars and Pure Protein why not go with the Pure Protein? Perhaps it is the taste; after all, sugar to most of us tastes very good.
This bar contains 50% of every Vitamin and mineral in it. You wont find many bars with that much. You will often find 15%, perhaps 25% or 35% but rarely 50% in a bar. What you will find is Vitamins A, Bs, C, D, E, Biotin, Calcium, Folate, Iron Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Magnesium, Zinc, and Copper.
The ingredients are: Protein Blend (that includes whey and calcium), Sugar Free Yogurt Coating; Glycerine, Marshmallow crème, Cocoa Powder, Crystalline Fructose, Natural Flavors, Vitamin/Mineral Blend (see above) and Potassium Sorbate.
There is an expiration date on the wrapper under the flap so check for it. The bar I have expires in October of 2001. It wont last that long since I am about to eat it.
What does it taste like?
I wont eat the whole box as I would Slim-Fast. But I dont want to eat a whole box of anything! I want something that is tasty enough for me to be able to swallow and does its job which is replacing nutrients I would have lost working out and gives me a healthy meal on the go. This is a true meal on the go as compared to other products that claim to be!
The White Chocolate Mousse is covered in yogurt with chocolate inside. It is soft even though I keep my bars in the refrigerator. It isnt delicious like Slim-Fast which does taste like a candy bar but that makes me eat it slowly. I wont gorge on this product but I will eat it, it is filling and I will feel satisfied for a couple of hours or 3 when I will eat again.
In summary: My recommendation from a year ago hasnt changed. I highly recommend WorldWide Sport Nutritions Pure Protein Bar. They arent for everyone and I hope my review will help you make a decision if it is for you. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions about this product.
Note: the protein comes from whey unlike Ultra Pure Protein Shake
