| JDinPA's Full Review: Purina Busy Chewnola |
I am usually game to try out new treats and snack products for my poochie, and have found most of them go over great once they leave the bag and find their way into my dog's mouth. When I purchased the Purina Busy Chewnola chew bone I was thinking "Leeta will like this, with it's three layers of chewy goodness." Yes, I do talk to myself in my head while shopping, and sometimes I strike up a conversation with complete strangers too!
Purina Busy Chewnola is a fairly large chew bone, at about 6" long and a good 1 1/2" wide. The one chewnola in the package weighs in at 4-ounces. Leeta, is a small 7 pound Jack Russell and is not daunted by big chew bones - if she likes something she'll work at it for days until it is gone. This bone may be a bit much for a very small or toy dog with a small mouth, or an older dog that has difficulty chewing bones and hard crunchy treats.
Leeta took the Busy Chewnola, dropped it, sniffed it, picked it up, looked at me, carried it a few feet and dropped it again. Every now and then she has picked it up and carried it around, but after 2 months now, I think it is just gathering dust and I am tossing it out to see if the squirrels want it.
It is true - I have found a doggy chew that I can totally NOT recommend. It looked good. The package made it sound good. Leeta must think it's a dead stick or something, for even if it was a stick she'd at least try to play with it.
Purina Busy Chewnola has three distinct layers. The outer layer is labeled at the "Lick" layer ~ it reminds me of a combination granola type log and a zagnut candy bar with it's rough grainy an almost petrified toasted coconut look to it. The next layer is called the "Chew" layer and is like rawhide chew wrapped around the inner "Savor" layer which is softer and chewer. All the layers are all basically different shades of tan. There is a very light grain like smell, and in just handling it no scent came off on my hands.
There are no artificial colors or flavors and it makes me think that Purina was trying to attract dog owners that themselves only eat all natural wholesome foods. Good concept, but this chew has completely failed with my doggy, and since Leeta will chew apart a pine cone for goodness sake, I would have to say this chew bone rates way down on the list of acceptable chew stuff.
The Ingredients include: Beefhide, oats, brown rice, maltodextrins, rye flour, wheat flour, sugar, animal digest, citrus fiber, lecithin, salt, phosphoric acid, sorbic acid (preservative), propionic acid (preservative), potassium sorbate (another preservative), and xanthan gum.
The Guaranteed Analysis of Purina Busy Chewnola is: Crude Protein @ 14.0% minimum Crude Fat is @ 1.0% minimum Crude Fiber is @ 1.5% maximum Moisture is @ 15.0% maximum
The package states Feed on an easy to clean floor. I cannot comment on the mess this chew bone would make as Leeta refuses to chew it, play with it, or have anything to do with it.
Purina Busy Chewnola is distributed by Nestle Purina PetCare Company, St Louis, MO 63164; It is a product of Colombia. You can call the company at 1-800-7PURINA, M-F, 7-7 CT; or check them out on the web at PURINA.com
I cannot recommend this chew bone. If you have bought and your dog either liked or didn't like this product, please leave a comment on how it went at your house.
