| rdouble's Full Review: Purina Dog Chow Senior 7+ |
When I first read about this food, I thought it would be worth a try. My dog is fifteen years old, and a bit overweight, and I trust Purina brand foods. It claimed to be helpful for dogs that are less active and more digestible to older dogs. On the website, they say:
"Dog Chow Senior 7+ also features Ulti-Pro®, the enhanced protein system from Purina. The 25% protein level in Senior 7+ helps older dogs maintain muscle and lean body mass, help fight off infection, and stay stronger. And all of these important nutritional advantages are delivered in delicious, easy-to-chew morsels dogs love! "
I bought a bag, and started feeding it to my dog. He liked it right away. He accepted the change from his old food with no problems at all.
After a few bags of this, I noticed he was looking even fatter than before. He was also itching his skin more.
It was about this time that we adopted a new dog. She is a German Shepherd, and she has an allergy to soy. We scoured the dog food information pages again, looking for the right formula for her. We found Purina One Lamb and Rice. It contained no soy and was available at the supermarket and at Walmart, and was priced only a few dollars more per bag than the Senior 7 food we were used to buying. We started feeding that to both dogs when we ran out of the Senior & food.
I noticed after a bit that his coat is fuller and has more gloss than before. He is also thinner, in only a few weeks. I think the Senior 7 food might have made him more bloated, because the look of him changed so rapidly, I don't think fat stores would come off so quickly. He is also more active now, playing with the four year old shepherd.
The Purina One Lamb and Rice formula is a more concentrated nutrition I think. He eats a bit less of it, and seems to be feeling well on it. He had a checkup recently and the vet said that she thinks he looks great for a dog of his age. Besides that he still is overweight, he is in good shape.
