I will learn sooner or later to not ask my husband to pick up dog food. I have a couple of brands that I prefer to buy that are better nutritionally than some on the market. Purina Kibbles and Chunks Dog Food is one that falls in the latter category. Read on to see what I'm talking about.

What Purina Has To Say

Purina markets this dog food as 100% complete nutrition for your dogs. This food has several different size kibbles and bits. Some are meaty and tender while others are hard and crunchy. The dog food is a beef flavor which dogs love. Purina's advertising claims; "The big beefy flavor in every bite keeps your dog coming back for more."

One of the things I really didn't agree with is the recommendation on the package to feed Purina Kibbles and Chunks Dog Food to weaning puppies. Most people know that puppies require a different diet than adult dogs.

From the package:

Weaning Pups: Start pups on Purina Kibbles and Chunks Dog Food as early as they begin to nibble at solid foods, generally at 3 to 4 weeks of age.

Growing Pups: Feed pups (up to 6 months of age) all of the Purina Kibbles and Chunks Dog Food they will consume at intervals throughout the day.

Personally, I find the above bad advice. After you read the ingredient statement you will see why.

Ground yellow corn, ground wheat, soybean meal, beef and bone meal, corn gluten meal, beef tallow preserved with BHA and mixed-tocopherols (source of vitamin E), sugar, water, sorbitol, animal digest, salt, phosphoric acid, dicalcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, sorbic acid (a preservative), l-lysine monohydrochloride, calcium propionate (a preservative), choline chloride, dl-methionine, glyceryl monostearate, zinc sulfate, vitamin supplements (E, A, B12, D3), ferrous sulfate, added color (red #40, yellow #6, yellow #5, blue #2), niacin, manganese sulfate, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, biotin, thiamine mononitrate, garlic oil, copper sulfate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, sodium selenite.

How Did The Pups Like It?

Unfortunately, this was purchased for relief during Hurricane Katrina or I would have returned it to the store. The doxies all ate it without any problems. I can't say they loved it but didn't turn up noses either. I did find that they are more of this food, became hungry before the next feeding. I'm sure this is due to all the fillers in Purina Kibbles and Chunks Dog Food. Will I purchase it again? Only if it is an emergency!

This is an update I decided to add to this review. My pups have all now started having a reaction to this food and are throwing it all up. It's going in the garbage! They should rename it to Kibbles and Chunking Dog Food!

Final Thoughts And Recommendation

Although the protein content is high you have to look at whee the source is coming from. Purina Kibbles and Chunks Dog Food has lots of fillers including ground yellow corn, corn gluten meal, beef and bone meal, animal digest. Corn is a known cause of allergies in dogs also leading to dry and itchy skin. I also do not like the fact that this is marketed for puppies who require a good protein source in their first year. I give Purina Kibbles and Chunks Dog Food 1 Star only because it is edible. Also, a word of advice to consumers, please read your ingredient labels!
