Pros: Easy (relatively) to serve; most dogs will like it
Cons: Pouches tear open too easily.
Although I'm doing other and more lucrative things to earn a decent paycheck, I have, on occasion, continued to take on pet sitting jobs both to have a little extra cash and help someone out. Besides, I love dogs and cats, so it's not exactly an unpleasant assignment to accept.
As I write this (May 2006), I'm on my final full day of dog sitting for my neighbor Elena, who is away on a Mediterranean cruise. She not only has three or four adopted cats who are basically independent and don't require too much hands-on care, but she also owns a beautiful and friendly Lab-husky mix named Laika.
One of the things Elena told me about the care and feeding of Laika was that she's very fussy about her food. One day she might go for Pedigree Traditional Ground Dinner Canned Food for Dogs Chunky Beef, only to turn her nose up at it the next day.
That's why Elena purchases a wide spectrum of dog foods, ranging from the aforementioned Pedigree Traditional Ground Dinner Canned Food for Dogs Chunky Beef to Purina Moist & Meaty Burger with Cheddar Cheese.
Experience With This Product: Although I'll serve my canine charges canned food if that's what the owners have on hand, I much prefer to feed them either dry dog food or products such as Gaines Burgers and Purina Moist & Meaty Burger. These foods still smell like pet food, but not unpleasantly so, and they don't splatter on one's shoes or stain one's jeans if one opens the can the wrong way and that gravy-like stuff flies out.
Each serving of Purina Moist & Meaty Burger with Cheddar Cheese comes in a see-through cellophane pouch just strong enough to prevent spillage/spoilage. The material is very light and thin; the first time I opened a pouch (Laika usually has to have two), the red and yellow burger-like strands went flying all over the kitchen floor.
Purina Moist & Meaty Burger with Cheddar Cheese feels a bit, well, like slowly drying ground beef...still moist but no longer juicy. It smells somewhat meaty with the added tang of cheese and dog food additives, but it doesn't smell as strong as some canned foods. I didn't take a deep whiff to see if the cheddar bits smelled like cheese, but I can assume they do.
As for Laika, she doesn't eat it very eagerly when I feed her at her house. Maybe it's because it's hot out on that porch where she stays most of the time, or maybe the cats get at it, but she only nibbles at it half-heartedly.
But when I bring her to our house to spend the day, she has a quiet corner by the front door where she can eat in peace, so she's been gobbling down her servings of Purina Moist & Meaty Burger with Cheddar Cheese with canine gusto. Yesterday, for instance, after I had gotten her settled down and made sure she had fresh drinking water and had gone to the bathroom outside, I server her one pouch, then went upstairs to get some work done. 15 or 20 minutes later, I saw that two-thirds of the Purina Moist & Meaty Burger with Cheddar Cheese were gone, and Laika was curled up and sleeping next to her food dish.
Final Thoughts: Today I served this product to Laika, along with a can of Ol' Roy Hearty Cuts in Gravy Country Stew. Laika seems to prefer the latter, although she did eat half of the portion of Purina Moist & Meaty Burger with Cheddar Cheese fairly fast. It's relatively easy to serve provided one uses care in opening the package, and Laika seems to genuinely like it.
