About two months ago or so, I was listening to the radio while on the computer playing a game and there was my favorite DJ being a spokeswoman for Purina ONE. I didn’t really hear anything except “The Purina ONE Challenge”Z and call such and such a number for a “Free Bag of Purina ONE Dog Food.” Well I was all up on that considering the financial dire we have been in and out of over these past ten months or so. Sure a free bag of expensive dog food sounds great.

Well I kind of forgot about it until I got a letter in the mail a month ago with an enclosed coupon for a free 8 lb bag of Purina ONE formula just as long as long as the price didn’t exceed $10.60. I ended up paying $.83 cents extra for the bag which isn’t a bad deal at all since it is normally $10.29. Enclosed with the letter was a nice brochure explaining the 30 day Purina ONE Performance Challenge.

The Purina ONE Challenge

Basically Purina ONE is challenging the consumer to feed your pet (cats are also included) their food for one month straight Purina ONE dry dog food. From the starting date to 30 days later they promise there would be improvement in these areas:

1) how your pet eats their food
2) what type of coat/fur your pet has
3) what type of skin your pet has
4) how big is your pet’s energy level
5) what your pet’s eyes look like
6) what kind of stool your pet has and how often they need to go
7) overall your pet is in what condition

Purina ONE strongly believes that over the course of the 30 days you will begin to see the transition from a higher energy level to better stools to a shinier coat and finally better breath and clean teeth. I decided to take them up on this challenge. The brochure even illustrated how to slowly take your current dog food, which was Pedigree Small Crunchy Bites, and start your pet on the Purina ONE. Casey and I met up with their challenge and took it.

Casey’s Challenge of the Purina ONE Challenge

Casey, my dog, has been taking the Purina ONE Beef and Rice formula which looks like tiny little triangles of food about a centimeter in length on each side. I actually tasted a little piece of the food and it didn’t taste that bad at all. So I get a little into my work, at least you know I am doing a thorough review!

I did what Purina ONE told me to do with changing his food slowly as to not upset his stomach or his walks out in the park fort of speak. In order to keep up with the challenge, on one Saturday my fiancé ran out to Pet Smart in the hopes that a tattered bag of Purina ONE beef and Rice would be around. I don’t know if you know this but on Saturdays, Pet Smart discounts any bags to $5.00 if they have been ripped partly or aren’t in perfect condition for the consumer. They are taped up a bit but for $5.00 for 20-30 lbs of dog food, I am fine with that.

Anyways, it was the only way we could keep up financially with the Purina ONE challenge and luckily we came upon two bags. Well my fiancé did but I helped push him out the door to do it cheering him on.

So thirty days went by and I watched my dog in every area that the Purina ONE Challenge requests you too.

The RESULTS are IN

Here are my results:

1) Casey has always “eagerly” eaten his food so there was no change in that
2) Casey’s coat went from “fairly shiny” to “healthy and glossy”
3) Casey would occasionally have “itchy” or “flaky skin” which has improved to a “normal” status now. I don’t see him scratching nearly as much as I used to.
4) It is difficult to place value Casey’s energy level. He has always laid around a lot being that he has three legs. He is an older dog and not a pup anymore and the energy level just isn’t there as it used to be. I didn’t really see a difference in Casey. He would still go greet my fiancé at the door when he came home from work and he would still run to the door when he had to go outside. It was basically the same.
5) Casey’s eyes have always been bright and shiny so there was no change there.
6) I don’t do “poop scoop” duty and as far as I know Casey was going only once a day sometimes two times. Now his stool has firmed up and it has been still been one or two times a day.
7) Overall my dog had improved and was healthy.

What Do I, the owner, Think of the Purina ONE Challenge and Purina ONE Beef and Rice Dry Dog Food?

So do I think that the differences are attributed to the Purina ONE Challenge and Casey eating the Beef and Rice Dry Dog Food everyday for 30 days straight? Yes, I absolutely believe that Purina ONE had a great deal to do with the areas that have changed.

Purina ONE says right on the back of the bag that “Veterinarians at Purina have identified six signs of optimal pet health, and Purina ONE is formulated to deliver all six.”

The Six signs of Optimal Pet Health are:

1) Body Condition
2) Immune System
3) Bone Health
4) Digestion
5) Skin, Coat & Eyes
6) Dental Health

I believe that Purina ONE has created the right successful formula for pets, dogs as well as cats. The Beef and Rice formula made by Purina ONE was tasty and didn’t smell like “dog food” usually does. I could tell and see the changes that my dog was going through throughout that month.

Purina ONE recommended for my dog’s weight 2 – 2 ˝ cups of dry food a day which is what he was regularly receiving previously. There is a chart on the side of the bag if you were to have questions though. You can also add water to the Purina ONE dry dog food to moisten it up a tad. There are other feeding instructions that they offer as well on the bag.

Summary

Casey has improved significantly throughout this Purina ONE Challenge. I never would have thought to try this dog food considering it is about $17.99 per 20 lb bag I think or maybe it is for more lbs. Nevertheless, in our financial condition, it just wouldn’t be a thought to try it. Pedigree was always reasonable and he loved those small crunchy bites.

Well he loves the little triangles of Purina ONE’s Beef and Rice even more. He licks the bowl clean between that and his wet food, he has hit doggie heaven. As for my fiancé, he is happy that Casey has firm stools and he doesn’t have to pick up a mess. For me, it just all worked out and we will keep Casey on Purina Beef and Rice as long as we can afford it. It is what I consider to be the best dog food out there for my dog. BARK! BARK! Casey Agrees as well!
