Purina-O.N.E. dog food of many to avoid

Written: Jun 27 '01
Pros:Not as nutritionless as most, dogs seem to love the taste.
Cons:Checmicals and added oils can inflame certain dogs allergies to these products.
The Bottom Line: Purina ONE is not as bad as some, but still not the best choice for Canine Nutrition.

As dog foods go, Purina ONE came highly reccomended by other sworn users. My dog was not bothered by this food as much as some other ones, because he has a quite sensitive stomach.

We no longer use Purina ONE for the dogs, rather we use another brand that the ingredients dont even compare to. Let me explain.

Purina ONE, though more nutritious than most, contains something the Purina company uses frequently in all products called Palletants. Dogs have no taste buds, so Palletants , which are usually sprayed on and have that meaty "smell", are chemically created Olfactory stimulants, that stimulate your dogs very elaborate nose to tell them this food is edible. If you spray Palletants on cardboard, a dog will eat it. This has been proven. This is why dogs with "punched in faces", who have less of a sense of smell, are more finicy eaters. They cant get as aroused by the chemicals added to make them eat the food.

So why would they need to add palletants if the food is beef, chicken and other things dogs crave? Well, because actually, its not really all that much meat, its mostly corn meal and animal bones ground up. As you may guess, dogs dont go crazy over the meaty taste of corn. Purina ONE is a little bit better because it uses Lamb and Rice as main ingredients, then other things like Corn and wheat glutten. Most dog foods dont even have that much meat in them, just traces of things like gut, eyes, brain and hooves. These have little to no nutritional value to your dog so they add artificial nutrients, palletants, and corn meal... do you see where I am going with this?

But you say you have been giving your dog Purina products for 14 years and hes just fine? Well chances are, he could be better, or, he could HAVE been better if you fed him better foods when he was younger. But I will say, feeding your dog "better" foods is a financial commitment not many with large dogs are willing to make. If you have small dogs and they eat 1 cup of food a day, I reccomend splurging on "whole" foods, like Innova, Natural Select, and other dog and cat foods that contain human grade food products like flax seed, whole chicken, turkey, and sardines, and not the left over entrails of animals and corn. The benifits are better brain function, better joint maintenance, and much better bowel, skin, tooth, and kidney health. If you HAVE to use a cheaper easier to get food, Purina ONE is not bad for the short term.

But your vet reccomends Science diet right? Iams? Those arent too bad either, but still preserved with BHT you will see in the ingredients, trust me. BHT fed day after day after day, is not a good idea. Its a chemical and your dog is what he eats, and after a few years of chemicals, your dog will show his wear. My Dog is now suffering from improper diet issues , even after I changed it to a better food after four years.

What your dog eats is a personal choice - Many MANY people could really care less if their animals eat the best foods, as long as they "seem" healthy and happy. Why do vets reccomend Foods like Science Diet and others? Because vets get money galore for stocking their offices with these foods. If nutrition is a big concern with your pet, or, if your dog suffers from ear and foot alelrgies you cant seem to get rid of, try switching to a chemical free food and watch for improvement.
