Why? Because for flavor, performance, and price, it plain beats Macanudo cigars. (BTW: Macanudo is the most popular premium cigar in America.)
Two weeks ago, JR Cigars offered customers -- as part of its weekly special -- the opportunity to buy a box of these handmade Honduran Presidente cigars for a ridiculously low price. Normal retail is $131.25 per box of 25 ($5.25 each).
Because of overstock conditions, I was able to buy a box of 25 for only $49.95 (about $2 each).
What a deal. Of course I bought a box. Since their arrival on my doorstep last week, I have thus far smoked two and am super pleased with this cigar. I've tried a couple of different Puros Indios cigars over the past few months -- the Especiale 2 (6½" x 46) and the Petites (5" x 38) -- and I was very impressed with the brand.
Here are the details:
Cigar: Puros Indios Presidente
Manufacture: handmade in Danli, Honduras, under the supervision of cigar legend Rolando Reyes, Sr.
Size: 7¼-inches long, ring gauge of 47 (slightly longer than a typical Churchill cigar)
Strength: Medium-bodied, with medium-to-full Flavor
Wrapper: Ecuador Sumatran (i.e., Sumatran-seed tobacco grown in Ecuador); color is Colorado Claro (mid-brown, tawny shade)
Binder: Ecuador
Filler: Brazil, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and Nicaragua
Construction: In terms of construction, I found this cigar to be excellent. The wrapper was smooth, uniformly colored, slightly oily, exhibited minimum veining, and had great elasticity and tensile strength. The foot was neatly trimmed, the cap was firmly fixed. The only shortfall that I've witnessed in the two Presidente cigars that I've tried so far is that I find that the barrel tends to grow a little soft during mid-smoke, and I suggest that a denser packing of the filler blend would help this cigar.
While this cigar is outwardly beautiful, the best part is the smoke. This cigar is medium-bodied and light on the palate, but is full flavored -- exhibiting oily wood and nutty tones in the initial half of the smoke, and surrendering to a mild, slightly sweet, cocoa-tinged leathery finish. It's exactly the type of flavor profile that I seem to like the most in a cigar. The exotic flavors experienced are the result of the unique blending of fantastic tobaccos from four different countries.
Recommendation: Highly recommended. A must. Sensational. I was very pleased by this cigar. In terms of value, I rate this a 5-star cigar. Most smokers will enjoy this cigar.
Of the 100+ different cigars that I've tried in the past year, this one ranks right near the top. If you like quality cigars -- like the H. Upmann 1844 Director Royale, for example -- I think you should give the Presidente a try. Enjoy it with some 30-30 Tequila or a pint of Stone Brewing Company's Smoked Porter. You will not be disappointed.
