Purple, Green, and Yellow by Robert Munsch
Written: May 9, 2012
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:colorful, funny, silly ending
Cons:mom gives in too easily, overindulging her daughter
The Bottom Line: Brigid really wants to color with markers, but when she goes a little crazy with her drawing will she get in big trouble?
My seven year old's favorite author is Robert Munsch. He has enjoyed his many books since preschool, listening to his preschool teacher read them aloud to him. Now my son likes reading them on his own. Every time he reads one of Munsch's books I can almost guarantee at least once he will laugh out loud and sometimes he wants to make sure I hear the funny part as well and reads it to me. One that he recently read (and then I read myself after he was done) was Purple, Green and Yellow.
In this book a little girl, Brigid, begs her mother for markers, since all her friends have them. Her mother doesn't want to, afraid the girl will color on the walls, or the floor, or even herself. But Brigid mentions that there are ones that wash off. Her mom caves and buys her 500 wash off-able markers. Brigid draws many amazing things and always draws just on the paper. But her friends are getting more markers so she asks her mom for the kind that smell. She caves, since she sees that her daughter is an artist and buys her 500 of the smelly kind. Next the request comes for the kind that never come off until you're dead (and maybe even later). But this time she does get bored and decides to color her fingernails, since even her mother does that. And then she does her hands, and then why not her whole body as the markers are so bright and beautiful. When she looks in the mirror after she is done, she knows her mom will kill her and when she tries to wash it off it won't scrub off. What will she do? How will her mom react? Will her mom find out?
The book has a lot of exaggeration and repetition which will appeal to young listeners/readers and helps with the humor. Wanting to do what the other kids are doing/have what the other kids have is something plenty of children experience.
The artwork is by Helene Desputeaux and is very colorful. I really liked how Brigid didn't draw amazing intricate drawings, but things that children could draw, mostly fruits. The scenes are very bright and Brigid does go pretty crazy with drawing on herself. I enjoyed the colorful illustrations that emphasized the theme of the story.
Overall, this is another fun Munsch book. There is the obligatory 'adult acting the fool' aspect to this book, but not as strong as some of his others. My son and I both liked this one quite well.
