| dlstewart's Full Review: Pyrex Glass Liquid Measuring Cup (4-cup) |
My grandmother used Pyrex, my mother uses Pyrex, and I use Pyrex. We wouldnt keep buying it if it wasnt good! I think I own every size measuring cup that Pyrex makes.
What You See is What You Get
I love viewing everything inside a measuring cup. Have you ever poured sugar into a glass measuring cup only to find a few undesirable black specks that need fishing out? Or perhaps youve poured oil into a glass measuring cup only to see that an air bubble didnt burst? Without seeing that air bubble and popping it, the measurement would be wrong. Glass offers cooks a second chance before blowing the first chance.
So Many Uses for a 4-cup Measuring Cup
A 4-cup measuring cup is a must for any cook. Not only do I measure ingredients in it, but it comes in handy as a small mixing bowl. Whisk an egg, combine melted butter and sugar, mix the ingredients for a streusel topping this is one handy measuring cup.
This measuring cup can also go in the microwave. Ive melted butter in it using the microwave and have cooked small amounts of vegetables such as thinly sliced carrots. Pyrex is designed to tolerate temperature fluctuations. I have added boiling water to my 4-cup Pyrex measuring cup without any problem. It can also go in the refrigerator; I place it there containing leftover pancake batter. The measuring cup is rated as being safe in the freezer, too, though I never have put it in the freezer. Ive also taken my Pyrex 4-cup Measuring Cup into the garden to harvest blueberries and strawberries.
The Features I Like Best
* The measuring cup is see-through!
* The handle is comfortable with an indentation to rest the thumb
* Measurement markings are easy to read
* Variety of measurements for cooking versatility
* Pour spout doesnt slop
* Resistant to scratching & stains
* Easy to clean
* Dishwasher safe
* Durable the markings havent faded despite years of use
* Pyrex designs their measuring cups to nest, taking up less space in the cupboard
Minor Dislikes
* Measuring cup is heavy being made of glass
* Wish the handle were a bit longer for larger hands
* Pyrex chips (but Ive never had a measuring cup shatter)
* The 4-cup measuring cup has a large footprint and takes up room in the cupboard
Measuring the Measuring Cup
My Pyrex Glass Liquid Measuring Cup (4 Cup) measures 4 3/8-inches tall. At its widest point (including handle) it measures 7 3/4-inches wide. The base measures 5-inches wide. The handle is curved for comfort and is 3 1/4-inches long.
Four Ways to Measure!
One side of this measuring cup has measurements for cups and ounces. The other side of the cup has measurements for liters and milliliters. Its great to have so many options. Note that the measurements start at one cup. My feeling is that the manufacturer believes anyone using a 4-cup measuring cup wont be measuring anything less than one cup. I also want to mention that the markings on my Pyrex 4-cup Measuring Cup are in red (not blue as shown).
The cups and ounces are arranged in three vertical columns.
To the Left Cups
This is a 4-cup measuring cup with markings at 1/4 cup, 1/2 cup, and 3/4 cup intervals. On the left side, the measurements start at one cup with no markings below a one-cup measurement. In writing the measures increase by 1/2 cup intervals. For example, 1 cup is written, then a line appears for 1 1/4 cups, then 1 1/2 cups is written with a line appearing for 1 3/4 cups.
In the Center Ounces
The ounces start measuring at 8 ounces with no markings for anything below 8 ounces. The cup measures from 8 ounces to 32 ounces. The line markings are for 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28 and 32 ounces. Only 8, 16, 24 and 32 ounces appear in writing.
To the Right More Cups
These measurements start at one cup and increase in 1/3 cup, and 2/3 cup intervals. For example, one cup is written, then in writing with a line appear the measurements 1 1/3 cups, 1 2/3 cups, 2 cups, 2 1/3 cups, etc. up to 1 quart.
The liters and milliliters are arranged in two vertical columns.
Liters
To the left, the measurements start with 300 and increase until they reach one liter. The written increments are: 300, 500, 700, one liter. Lines appear between these written measurements for measuring between these amounts. (Im not a metric wizard in case you are wondering.)
Milliliters
To the right, the measurements start with 200 and increase until they reach 1000 milliliters. The written increments are: 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000. Again, lines appear between these written measurements for measuring between these amounts.
History of Pyrex
Pyrex was discovered in 1913 by Dr. Jesse T. Littleton, who worked for Corning. He first made a casserole dish for his wife from a cut-down battery jar made of Nonex. The Pyrex process was refined, and the first official Pyrex product was manufactured by Corning (a 9-inch pie pan). There are several theories for how the name Pyrex came into being. One naming possibility is that the first product manufactured was a PIE dish, and that the ex ending came from NONEX. Another thought is that the Greek word PYRA means hearth and was combined with the ex ending from NONEX.
Caring for Pyrex
The manufacturer says that Pyrex is dishwasher safe, and I have washed plain Pyrex cooking pans in the dishwasher without problem. But I dont want to risk the harsh dishwasher detergent scraping off the measuring cup markings, so I hand wash my Pyrex measuring cups in warm water with Dawn dishwashing liquid. A friend has soft water and washes her Pyrex measuring cups in the dishwasher without a problem -- the markings look like new. I have hard water and once tried washing a Pyrex measuring cup in the dishwasher only to have the markings fade. I own Pyrex measuring cups that are easily 15 years old, and with hand washing they look almost new. Pyrex also offers a one- or two-year warranty depending upon the product purchased. The 4-cup Pyrex Measuring Cup (purchased by itself) comes with a one-year warranty. When the Pyrex 4-cup measuring cup is purchased in a 3-piece set (1 cup, 2 cup, 4 cup measuring cups), there is a 2-year warranty.
Summary
I love Pyrex products. At about $6.00, this is affordable. The Pyrex 4-cup Measuring Cup is a special favorite. The size is versatile and can withstand hot and cold. Pyrex is a durable material, and Pyrex products have lasted in this household for over a decade. I would recommend them to anyone and also give them as housewarming or bridal shower gifts. Pyrex products in a gift basket with other kitchen goodies and brownie and cake mixes are always a hit!
