My 8-cup Pyrex Measuring Cup is My Favorite Mixing Bowl

Pros:Durable, easy to read markings, great handle and spout
Cons:None for me, but may be too heavy for some.
The Bottom Line: The Pyrex 8-cup Liquid Measuring Cup is a great basic kitchen tool that should be in everyone's kitchen
When ever I go to bake anything the first piece of kitchen equipment I reach for is my Pyrex 8-cup Measuring Cup, because it is one of the best mixing bowls I own.
The Basics This large Pyrex measuring cup is made of clear heat resistant glass and actually holds closer to 10 cups. Etched onto the outside of the cup are various measurements both English and Metric. The English system includes markings for whole cups, ounces and pint/quarts. The metric side includes milliliters and liters. The largest measurements are 8 cups and 2 liters. One side has a hook style handle and opposite that is a spout for easy pouring. The Pyrex Measuring Cup is microwave, dishwasher and oven safe and comes with a 1 year warranty.
My Experience I have been using this Pyrex measuring cup for over 10 years and it is one my favorite kitchen tools. Despite everything I have done to it, it still looks like new. The markings are still clear and show no signs of peeling off. It is durable and stands up well to abuse. There isn’t a chip anywhere!
I very rarely have the need to use this for actual measuring. Once in a while to measure out water for soup, but since I also have the Pyrex 1, 2 and 4-cup measuring cups those work better for most recipes. I use my 8-cup Pyrex Measuring Cup almost exclusively as a mixing bowl. I love to use this for cake or muffins mixes. The spout makes it easy to pour batter into muffin tins or cake pans. It also stands up very well to my small hand mixer, even when the beaters brush up against the sides.
I have never had cause to put this Pyrex measuring cup in the oven but it does go in the microwave frequently to soften butter for baking. The handle is a great feature for keep a good grip on the bowl while I’m working. This is especially true of anything that I need to take a whisk to. I can use one hand to steady the bowl by the handle while I go to town smoothing out my batter. Since my children love to help when I cook I can keep a grip on the handle and keep my hands clear of their often overzealous stirring. But since the sides of the bowl are steep and the bowl is deep rather than wide, the shape helps keep messes to a minimum.
Even if I am baking something that requires the use of my stand mixer, I still pull out this Pyrex mixing bowl. I use it to measure and stir the dry ingredients before adding to the wet in the work bowl the mixer. The spout makes it easy to pour the dry ingredients around the beater.
The Pyrex 8-cup measure is intended for measuring liquid ingredients only. Since there are no markings for partial cups this isn't the most practical device for measuring most baking ingredients any way. The only exception is when I make bread. Since most recipes call for a 1 cup range of flour I dump the maximum amount into the bowl using the measurements and just add my flour from there. Since bread is something done by feel you don't need the same accuracy as for other baked goods and this large cup is close enough.
Most recently, the Pyrex 8-cup Measuring Cup has become my waffle mixing bowl. My family likes yeast waffles, so I prepare a batch and overnight the batter rises from 4 cups to 8 cups (or more). Then I can pour the batter directly from the bowl onto the waffle maker. My Pyrex 8-cup Measuring Cup makes homemade waffles almost as easy to preapre as toast. Pancakes benefit from the convenience of a single bowl for mixing and pouring too.
Cleanup is easy, it always goes in the dishwasher. It doesn’t seem to matter if it is the bottom or top rack, it comes out clean every time. My only potential complaint is that the bowl is heavy, so it would not be suitable for someone with hand or wrist problems.
Final Thoughts This just seems to be one of the those products you can’t go wrong with. Whether you use it for measuring large quantities of liquid or just as a mixing bowl the Pyrex 8-cup measure is a great addition to any kitchen.
