| Staceys1's Full Review: Pyrex Smart Essentials 8-Piece Mixing Bowl Set 107... |
When my husband and I got married almost sixteen years ago, we chose black and white as the colors to decorate our kitchen in. Over the years, appliances, dishes and other cooking utensils have needed to be replaced either because they wore out, or, as has been the case with some of the glass items, I broke them. We had a nicely matching set of four different sized nesting mixing bowls, which alternated between black and white, but when I broke the last one about two years ago, it was time to get a whole new set, rather than just using various other bowls that we had. I chose the Pyrex Smart Essentials 8 Piece Mixing Bowl Set as our replacement.
After looking around a bit, I could not find a black and white set of bowls that were reasonably priced and which would fit my family's needs, so I opted for this Pyrex set that almost every store (both online and brick and mortar) seemed to be offering. The Pyrex company has been around for many years and I fully expected to get a high-quality product.
This is considered an eight-piece set, but to me it is a four-piece set with four covers. The bowls are clear glass, with a small lip around the edge so that you can easily and securely attach the lids, but this edge also gives a place to hold onto while mixing or stirring the food you place into the bowls.
The bowls are four graduated sizes: 1 quart, 1.5 quarts, 2 .5 quarts and 4 quarts. These sizes (along with their metric equivalents) can be found in small print on the bottom of each bowl, but to make it even easier, it is imprinted very clearly on each lid as well. The clear bowls make it easy to see what food is contained inside if it is in the refrigerator storing something, but to brighten up the set a bit, the covers are a bright array of colors. The smallest is green, followed by orange, blue and red.
Thee Pyrex glass bowls can be used in both the oven and the microwave, can be used to store food in the refrigerator or freezer and are dishwasher safe. I have used my hand-held electric mixer in these bowls many times and I put the bowls and the lids in my dishwasher each time I use them, and after many, many uses, all of the pieces still look as good as new. The covers should only be put on the top rack of the dishwasher and should not be used in the oven. The covers attach securely to the bowls, which ensures that no liquid will spill out of them if they get knocked into while in the refrigerator. Even after many runs through the dishwasher, none of the covers have warped.
What I love best about this set is that the bowls nest inside of one another, with the lids on them. I have had set of nesting items before, but only the container portions fit easily inside of one another, leaving the lids to slide around inside of my cupboard, making me have to hunt them down when I wanted to use them.
I have found my Pyrex Smart Essentials 8 Piece Mixing Bowl Set to be very versatile. They are utilitarian enough to use while cooking, yet nice enough to put on the dinner table to serve food from. The larger ones are great for mixing meatloaf or pancake batter, or for serving pasta salad at a gathering. The smaller ones are perfect for mixing icing, scrambling eggs, or serving sauce or vegetables in.
For the price of about twenty dollars, this Pyrex Smart Essentials 8 Piece Mixing Bowl Set is a very good buy. The pieces are useful and durable and should last me quite some time...or at least until one breaks from user-error, such as me dropping one on the kitchen floor.
