Pros: good location, good food, nice rooms, best in area
Cons: small pool, no beach (but no hotels in hilo have a beach)
The Bottom Line: If you are going to be in Hilo, you can't go wrong with this hotel, but be sure you want to be in Hilo in the first place.

| joli's Full Review: Hilo Hawaiian Hotel |
I first moved to the Big Island, the Army put me up at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel for almost two months while I was looking for a house to rent. It is a good quality hotel, the best in Hilo, in my opinion. The Naniloa, right next door, is also a good hotel but I like the Hilo Hawaiian better. (There are no luxury hotels in Hilo.)
The Hilo Hawaiian Hotel is located on Banyan Drive in Hilo. Banyan Drive is less than a mile from the downtown area, it is lined with large Banyan trees planted by famous people (like Babe Ruth and Amelia Earhart), and it has a small golf course across the street from all the hotels. Banyan Drive is where most of the hotels in Hilo are, and it is also shared by a nice local beach (Reeds Bay) and a gorgeous Japanese-style garden (Liliuokulani Park), which is a nice place to get married if you can dodge the rain.
I stayed in a non-ocean view, which meant my lanai (porch) overlooked the parking lot, the koi pond, and the Banyan trees of Banyan Drive. The room was spotlessly-clean, and large enough for my purposes, with a separate bathroom and a tiny fridge. If you get an ocean-view room, you'll have a nice view of huge Hilo Harbor and Coconut Island, and Hilo itself.
The lobby of the hotel is open on one end (really neat when it rains), there is a small laundry room and snack room, and there is a small bar where you can get food. If you do stay at the Hilo Hawaiian, get the loco moco (hamburger patty on rice with gravy and egg - local favorite) at the bar or via room service. Their's is still one of the best I have ever tasted.
There is no beach at the hotel, but the hotel is right on the water (Hilo Harbor), and it has a small pool in the back.
