Barefooter's Full Review: Meg Cabot - Queen of Babble
My eleven-year-old daughter loves books by Meg Cabot, so when I glanced at Queen of Babble on the suggested reading shelf at my local library, I assumed it was another kid's book. One glance at the "New York Times Bestselling Author" written below the title, and I had to pick up the book and see what it was about.
Queen of Babble is indeed an adult novel. Lizzie, the main character, is a bubbly college graduate who simply can't keep her mouth shut. But wait, she didn't get her degree. Informed by her teacher (at her very own graduation party), Lizzie learns that she was supposed to complete a thesis to obtain her degree in fashion.
So she keeps that little detail a secret from her family and her best friend, Shari.
Lizzie is in love with Andrew, her boyfriend, who lives in London. She takes off to England to stay with him for the summer. Andrew isn't the person she thought he was, so she ends up on a train to France, looking for Shari.
Along the way, she meets Luke, a dreamy guy who steals her heart. Lizzie ends up babbling her secrets to him on the train trip to meet Shari. Little does she know, that Luke is heading to the same destination, carrying all of her secrets with him.
Lizzie's endless babbling gets her in and out of trouble during her stay in France. Shari ends up discovering that Lizzie didn't graduate. Luke's girlfriend runs off with another guy. Andrew and Luke both end up in her life-- which does she choose?
I found this book surprisingly delightful as Meg Cabot has a brilliant way of staging the story in great detail. Lizzie's personality shines through each chapter, and one gets a sense of her bumbling through her life. However, I think I would have enjoyed this book more during my own college years. I felt like an old fuddy duddy reading through the adventures of the 20-something crowd.
If it wasn't for the steamy scenes in the beginning and end, I would lend it to my daughter.
As it is, she'll have to wait until she's in college to read this.
