Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie''s plot.
Incest, mean girls, bullies, teenage sexual escapades, and family drama all play a part in this movie. Not to mention a main character who is deaf mute. I really don't know what to think of this movie. It feels wrong to like it but it was pretty good. Of course I could have done without the penis and masturbation speeches. The mean girls are not my cup of tea and the mocking of a disabled teen was definitely not something I care to witness. I have no idea what you know or don't know about this movie, so if you don't want to be spoiled a little, click away now.
A deaf mute girl comes to live with another family after her father is killed. Her mother died when she was younger. Dot hardly makes a sound in most of the movie but her eyes seem to tell us how she feels about what is going on around her. I desperately wanted to hear her voice speaking to others as she seemed background or filler without a voice. People open up around her since she can't hear them, she does read lips so they turn away from her when they reveal secrets. Such as a boy who likes her, talks about what he wants to do with her and how he has masturbated while thinking of her. The other teenager with who Dot lives talks about how she wants to kill her father for the incest. We do hear Dot speaking of her life and what has happened up to that point in her life in a monotone voice.
Nina is one of the popular cheerleaders and a mean girl. She seems to care more about her appearance and reputation than anything. Nina does not like that Dot has come to live with them and ignores her as much as possible. Her father is having sex with her and regularly comments on her body. Nina seems very stiff and cold at first but as the movie goes along, she becomes more of a feeling human being, even caring about Dot. I was not sure if she confessed her desire to kill her father to Dot because she truly believed Dot couldn't hear her OR if she was baiting Dot for some reason. Not until the end did I find out the truth.
Nina's father is Paul who molests her and is cold to his wife. He plays a major role in the film, hitting on his daughter...not physically but sexually. At one point he goes into Dot's room causing a little suspense at what he was going to do but he confesses his sins to her. Nina's mother is Olivia who seemed normal to start with and then turns into a pill popper who sleeps the day away. It makes you wonder if she didn't know about the sexual abuse or if she was ignoring it. The entire family seemed normal at the start but soon we find all is not as it seems.
The surprise comes when Dot accidentally speaks, she was selectively mute and not deaf after all. Shocking all of those who have confided in her. The ending brings the two girls close but does not provide closure to the story. What happens to them? Viewers do not see what happens to the girls afterwards. What I found unbelievable was Nina's unhappiness that Dot moved in with them, why wouldn't she feel relieved that another person around could stop the sexual abuse? What was the dramatic ending? Who dies? What brings the girls closer? Who goes to jail?
