Pros: Inexpensive, simple, does what it is intended to do quite nicely
Cons: Product support, average picture quality, poor product history
We have just bought this unit and have been testing it for about a week. We have a 22 month old that we need to keep entertained on long trips. The unit plays DVDs well and the setup is straight forward. The picture on the player is crisp and very viewable. The picture on the passive monitor, however is blurry in comparison.
The features we really like are the headrest mounting brackets that make it a breeze to install and remove from the vehicle. It comes with a very handy carrying case and a conveniently LONG cord to connect the passive display monitor (possible reason for blurry picture?). The units will both sit on the counter with a built-in fold-out stand which is quite handy for the wife to use in the kitchen (it takes up less counter space than the models that open like a clam-shell with the DVD in the base). The location of the headphone jacks require a 90 degree connector. The loading of DVDs can be a bit tricky due to the vertical orientation (when mounted) but can easily be removed from its mount in the headrest to load it horizontally. So far the unit appears to operate well in the vehicle but when the vehicle is off and then started, the image became pixelated. Removing the power from the unit and reconnecting it seems to fix this problem. When removing the power, the unit shuts off and the display disappears. When the power is restored, the unit resumes from where it left off. When the power is removed when plugged into a receptacle via its power supply, resuming operation does not result in a pixelated picture.
I am in the process of trying to figure out how to get a replacement passive monitor unit but dealing with Thomson Electronics (parent company of RCA) has been time consuming. We still have several weeks to return the unit for a full refund but will see how Thomson handles the warranty.
