| surferdude7's Full Review: RCA RC5255P DVD Player |
The RCA RC5355P DVD player plays your DVD movies plus VCD (Video CD) and MP3 music files from a CD-R (Recorded CD) or CD-RW (Rewritable) disc.
It comes in the silver or black models listing retail for $249 and found on the Internet for as low as $169. It weighs 12 pounds and measures 15 inches wide by 14 inches deep and 2 4/5 inches thick. (height)
DVD
The main purpose of this unit is playing DVDs and it does an excellent job as far as picture quality. Viewing on a 60 inch rear projection screen produces quality as good as seen on a 19-inch color tube TV.
This is a single DVD or CD unit, which means you can only load one DVD or CD at a time.
Sound
The RC5355P DVD player is Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS ready. This means you need a receiver capable of playing back Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS sound with a speaker system to go with it. The 5.1 speaker system will consist of five speakers and a subwoofer for a great theater sound.
You can connect the DVD player to any TV and listen to the sound through the TV speaker system.
When connected to a receiver and a 5.1 speaker system the sound is incredible with the movie coming to life all around you.
VCD
VCD known as Video CD can be played back on this player from any CD-R or CD-RW disc.
VCD is an area I havent used so I cannot tell you how good or bad this feature is on the RC5355P DVD player.
MP3
This unit also plays your MP3 music files recorded on a CD-R or CD-RW disc.
The menu system is plain and simple but you can play around 10 hours of music from one disc.
Screen Saver
There is an RCA logo that comes on after about 5 minutes of pausing a movie. The whole screen blacks out and the RCA logo bounces around the screen like a screen saver on a computer.
The Remote
The RCA remote is nice with easy to use buttons and programmable to other equipment. Like most remotes it will program about anything you have but not all functions will work, example: it works with my TV but the picture in picture does not work with the remote.
You can program equipment like your TV, VCR, Satellite System and more.
To full get use out of a universal remote like this is to have all RCA equipment to go with it.
Zoom
You can zoom into an area at 1.5, 2 and 4 times the size and move to any position on the screen. At the 1.5x and 2x the picture quality is fair about like a VHS tape and at the 4x it is to grainy and not worth using.

Overall
This unit that I am using has the silver finish, hooking up to just a TV is easy. Now hooking up to a 5.1 sound system can be a little confusing if this is your first time because of all the connection choices. The instructions are easy to understand and the DVD player comes with a one-year warranty.
Overall use is excellent as far as navigating with the control, picture quality and 5.1 sound. The MP3 menu is simple to use but I think there could be some improvements there, though the sound from the MP3 files sound good.
This is not a progressive scan DVD player, though it will work just fine with a TV with progressive scan.
It is an attractive unit that is rather small in size when compared to a VHS player.
