ajritz's Full Review: RCA RD1000 Kazoo (32 MB) MP3 Player
I wish I could tell you that all of the manufacturer's claims about ease of use, sound quality, and battery life were true. Unfortunately, I cannot. I am posting this review primarily to put potential buyers on notice - if you use Windows XP or plan on upgrading to WinXP in the near future, stay away from k@zoo!
I bought a k@zoo as a gift for my wife. She likes to listen to music while she works out on a Stairmaster. Because I'm the techno-geek in the family I wanted something that would be very easy to use (so that she could load songs herself). The unit also needed to be very small and lightweight, so as not to interfere with her workout.
Unfortunately, we'll never know. RCA has not developed drivers that allow the k@zoo to work with WinXP. When I sent an e-mail to RCA/Thompson Multimedia (Thompson makes the players for RCA) asking when drivers would be available, I received the following response:
"Dear Customer:
Thank you for visiting RCA.com.
We currently do not have any drivers available for the Kazoo player to support Windows XP. It has not been decided if we will be designing drivers for this system. Please refer to www.rca.com for future updates. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us at 1-317-415-4913.
Thank you for contacting us.
Sincerely,
Marilyn"
That's right. Three months after WinXP's launch, RCA/Thompson have not decided whether to design drivers compatible with Windows XP. This for a product that brags about being the only firmware upgradeable MP3 player on the market.
I'll be returning our k@zoo this weekend and shopping for an alternative. It's a shame too, because the form factor and software design would have been perfect for our needs.
