About Me: a man who limits his interests, limits his life"..~~Vincent Price~~

Keeping nice and toasty. REI Polar Pod 0 degrees.

Written: Jun 14 '04 (Updated Oct 31 '04)
Pros:Warm, good durability.
Cons:Little too bulky, slippery material.
The Bottom Line: This sleeping bag will take care of the average campers needs and then some.

I have had this sleeping bag for over 5 years now. Seems like forever and I have never regretted the decision. It is not too big for my needs nor is the weight too high. And since it is a 0 degrees rated sleeping bag, it is warm enough for any situation I have been in.

Why I bought this
I needed a new sleeping bag that would both meet my backing and car camping needs. My old sleeping bag was inherited from my parents. It was rated at 20 degrees, but due to its old age, it probably would be rated at 50 degrees by the time I replaced it.

Why a Mummy Style Bag?
The name comes from the shape because it looks a little like a wrapped Egyptian mummy. The bag is supposed to follow the contours of your body. In this way there is not a lot of empty space and this should keep you warmer during the night. By following the contours of you body it is wider at your shoulders and narrower at your feet. This design also wastes less fabric and fill, therefore you have a lighter/smaller product (but not by much.)

Problems with the Mummy style.
My out-laws (I mean in-laws) do not like their new mummy bags because it constrains them too much. They like the feel of blankets and apparently roll around in bed a lot. A mummy style bag does not allow the user to move a lot. So they will be putting their new bags in storage until cold weather and use their cheaper, but a whole lot bulkier, rolled sleeping bags.

What is included?
Just a stuff sack. A storage sack was not included. You will have to buy that separately if you wish. I just store it under his bed.

Durability
After scanning the bag over I have not noticed any loose threads, holes or any damage to parts of the bag. None of the seams are lose and the stitching is fairly tight. I have used this for almost 7 years and I have had no problems with this bag.

How does it work?
Just like all mummy style sleeping bags you stuff this in a small sack for travel. It takes you about 10 seconds to stuff, 20 seconds if you are a little slow. You do not roll or tie this bag up for storage.

How cold can you go.
This sleeping bag is rated at 0 degrees Fahrenheit or 0 degrees Celsius.

My experience
First, my only real problem with this bag is the slippery feel of the bag. If I am forced to pitch tent on an incline, I end up sliding down my mat during the night.
As for insulation I have been very warm, some times too warm. The insulation factor is great for my needs.
As far as warmth is concerned, I have never been cold in this bag. In some circumstances I have been too warm and I use the sleeping bag as a blanket instead. On one backpacking trip to Joshua Tree National Park it was very cold and windy, it was below 40 degrees including wind chill. To save weight we just brought along one large tarp instead of a couple of tents. My wife and I were very warm in our new sleeping bags and the envy of the group. Our other 3 friends were very cold and did not sleep very well. Needless to say our friends bought new sleeping bags shortly after that trip.

Who Should Buy This Sleeping Bag?
-People that need a relatively cheap sleeping bag that will work in most cold weather environments.
-People that run the risk of getting their sleeping bags wet.
-People that like good value for their money and do not care about brand names.
-People that do not mind the constraints a mummy style sleeping bag impose.
-People with external frame backpacks or have room for a bulky sleeping bag in their internal frame.

Polarguard HV fiberfill
The fill is called Polarguard HV fiberfill. It is a synthetic fill. According to the tag at the bottom of my sleeping it has the following advantages…
-Most durable synthetic insulation.
-Superior warmth.
-Superior loft, even when wet.
-25% lighter than standard Polarguard.
-Fast drying.
-Moisture resistant.
-Machine washable.
-Non-shifting.
-No Lumps or cold spots.
-Highly compressible.
-Odor free.
-Non-allergenic.
-Mildew and fungus free.
-Insect resistant.
-Long lasting

Advantages of synthetic fill.
-Keep warm even when wet.
-Cheaper than down.

Disadvantages of synthetic fill.
-Weigh more than down.
-Take up more space than down.

Storage tips
Some sleeping bags come with a larger “storage sack”. This is a good idea since you really do not want the bag to be compressed when you are not using it. I actually prefer to keep my sleeping bags under my bed instead of using a stuff sack. If you keep a sleeping bag stored like this, it will last for a much longer time.

Tips to staying warm
What I recommend doing is stripping down to shorts and a t-shirt (less if you like) and put the clothes that you are going to wear the next day at the bottom of your sleeping bag (this keeps them nice and toasty.) For whatever reason, I have been warmer in my sleeping bag with just shorts than I am with a fleece or jacket on. Try it, you will be surprised at the difference in warmth.

Dimensions and weight
Length: 81 inches
Width: 28.5 inches at the widest point. 15 inches at the feet.
Length rolled: 18 inches
Width rolled: 12.5 inches
Weight (with stuff sack): 4 pounds & 8 ounces.

Note: length rolled and width rolled are uncompressed.
Measurements are made using a craftsman tape measurer and a good cooks electronic scale.

Buying this used?
Since you can not buy this sleeping at REI.com any more you are either looking at REI’s reputation or you are buying this used. So if it is used then here is what you should look for.
-Check that the fill is still even.
-Check all seams, there should be no ropes or missing seams. Stitching should be tight.
-Colors should be uniform, no spotting.

Summary
This is a well designed and durable sleeping bag. It is good for backpacking or car camping and will be warm enough for most outdoor experiences, if not too warm.
