Pros: Very accurate GPS Navigation. Great Software Interface. Easy to read 3D screens.
Cons: Windshield Mount Sucks... Unit locks up. No reset button.
The Bottom Line: I would avoid this unit until the design flaws are corrected. They need to develop a better mounting system, and they also need to fix the locking problem.
cleith's Full Review: RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8100 Smartphone
I purchased my Tom Tom 910 on June 10, 2006. I was going to be traveling from Idaho to North Carolina. I departed for my 2550 mile road trip on June 12th. I used the 910 for my trip and traveled across the country without any problems from a navigational standpoint.
The 910 performed perfectly. Anytime I needed gas, I just touched the screen and it displayed the upcoming locations, anytime I needed a hotel, no problem, next hotel 12 miles ahead, same thing for rest stops or food spots.
Now for the bad. The 910 is not without its faults. I must agree with some of the other reviews that the windshield mount, totally sucks. This is a major design flaw. One thing that I discovered was that when you are traveling with a device like this, you will remove it from the windshield when you are not in your car, like eating or at the hotel. This means that you need to remove the 910 from its mount. This seems to be a very serious problem because I started noticing that the connectors and the fit started to seem like it was very loose and possibly on the verge of breaking. This made me very nervous about the long term effects on this.
Now for the really bad. You know how I said up a above that I did not experience any problems. Well that is not exactly true. It is true that on my 4 day trip traveling across country I had no problems. But on the 5th day, the day after I arrived at my North Carolina destination, the 910 experience catastrophic failure.
I was making a trip to a grocery store to pick up some supplies. I departed my hotel and was in route to a local POI Grocery Store. About half way to my destination, the 910 went crazy. All of a sudden for no apparent reason it started recalculating my GPS location. It flashed a message saying something like "Please Wait, Calculating Route" This was not due to anything I did. Then the unit rebooted itself and that was it. The system locked up, never to work again. In other words, in the infamous words of Dr. Macoy from Star Trek, I'm sorry Jim, its dead!
That was it. I pulled over on the side of the road, because I had no idea where I was going, or where I was at. I sat on the side of the road for 30 minutes trying to reset the 910, but to no avail. It was over. This beautiful relationship that I had developed with Kate, (the 910's voice) had come to an end. I was devasted.
I was then forced to rely up on my old navigational techniques. For the last 25 years I have used something called "The Force". The Force is not always accurate, but it does work during times of need. This was definitely one of those times.
So I began to concentrate and was able to tune into a very strong link of the force, which led me to a shopping center that just happened to have a Staples. I went into the Staples and purchased a different GPS system and used it to navigate to the local Bestbuy where I returned the Tom Tom 910 for a complete refund.
My overall impression of the 910 is that it was great for navigation and very accurate. Unfortuately, the design flaws with the windshield mount are going to be a serious problem for this device. The other major issue with locking up, appears to be something that other people have also encountered. I have since learned that the locking up problem has been reported by other customers. So I am not sure why these units lock up, and unfortunately there did not appear to be a reset button anywhere on the device.
My advice to anyone considering this device, is be careful with purchasing this device. If you do decide to purchase, then it might be worth while investing in one of those extended warrenty plans. It is a great device for navigation, but the flaws might be something that could cause some serious problems in your future.
Good Luck. I hope this review helps you decide on your purchase.
