michiman1's Full Review: RUST-OLEUM 245218 12OZ Hammer BRN Paint
We recently found the opportunity to try out Rustoleum Universal Hammered All-Surface Paint as part of our upstairs bathroom update. My wife was hinting at replacing the three tiered painted metal shelf which was now off color and a bit dated looking. I slipped out to the local large home store and ended up selecting this paint to try to salvage our existing shelf. I'll be honest here, I was attempting to thwart an estimated $95 to $100 purchase of a new shelf with my $7.99 paint purchase. I realized I had nothing to lose and as much as a hundred bucks to gain if my little project worked out. If the can top was any indication, the final product would be a great match. I got the approval to blast the tired looking almond colored shelf with this brown hammered metal colored paint.
In reading the label instructions, the folks at Rust-Oleum stated their paint was formulated to be sprayed over a number of different surfaces including wood, metal, plastic, concrete, brick, and vinyl. You will be purchasing a 12oz can with a unique spray head top. The can is designed with a top that is comfortable to hold as well as simple and neat to use. The manufacturer has added a small plastic band on the can's trigger which serves as a trigger lock. Simply shake the can vigorously for about a minute after the mixing ball starts to rattle and slide the band off.
The rather unique designed spray can is designed to spray from any angle. Rustoleum's advanced spray system is even designed to spray upside down. I liked the spray head, not only for it's comfort, but also for the fact I didn't end up with a hammered metal brown finger when the project was complete. Regular spray nozzles always ended up seeping some of the paint product onto my index finger - not so with this paint.
One coat was definitely insufficient to get the desired hammered metal look. I didn't even feel I could apply the first coat with an even color without puddling. Just as the can's instructions suggested, several ensuing light coats did leave an end result that was all that I could have expected but I was a bit surprised at the amount of paint necessary to get an even finish. I ended up using the entire can to cover the small three tier metal stand we were attempting to rescue.
Overall, the contents sprayed on fairly easily and evenly. I did notice what I would consider somewhat excessive over-spray which resulted in small globs of paint quite a way from the painting area. I do suggest taking some added precautions when using this product for the first time. We selected the brown hammered metal color which ended up being a excellent match to the antique style faucets, lights and mirror.
Rustoleum Universal Hammered All-Surface Paint can be used on both interior or exterior projects. I applied the paint outdoors when the temperature was a near optimal 70 degrees with only a bit of humidity in the air. The project was sufficiently dry to the touch in well under the 30 minute claim by the manufacturer. I did leave the shelf over night before handling. The can stated the paint can be handled after just one hour. Probably true, but I didn't take the chance. The instructions suggest the paint is fully dry after 24 hours. The folks at Rustoleum state that the final paint result is both fade and chip resistant. We have only had the shelf in place with minimal use for a few months and the paint has thus far not chipped. Since it is used indoors in a windowless bathroom, I can neither confirm or deny company's fade resistant claim.
For best results, hold the can 8 to 12 inches away from the surface and spray in steady back-in-forth motion slightly, overlapping each stroke. Spray on the product in light coats a few minutes apart. After one hour, it is suggested waiting a full 24 hours before adding additional coats. Be sure to wiipe the tip after use when finished spraying.
At $7.99, I thought the price was slightly high but still a fair value if I ended up with the claimed result... which I do feel was achieved. I definitely liked everything about the unique spray head built into the can. Based on my own experience, I have to offer four Epinions stars and a buy recommendation when it comes to Rustoleum Universal Hammered All-Surface Paint.
