Simple and Cheap The R.S.V.P. 9" Collapsible Vegetable Steamer
Written: Oct 22, 2002
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Rugged, indestructible, easy to clean. inexpensive
Cons:Drops pieces of veggies when lifted from the pot. Caution hot.
The Bottom Line: Once you get the hang of using this simple steamer, it adds another useful tool for your cooking.
I wanted this steamer after I saw my mother-in-law take it from the cabinet. I didnt ask her what it was just watched as she shook it open and when it extended out she placed the broccoli in and put it into a pot of boiling water. The broccoli was delicious. I found one at the mall and bought it to bring home.
Description
The R.S.V.P. 9" Collapsible Vegetable Steamer is made of 18/8 stainless steel. It fits into a variety of pots. It has three little legs on the bottom so the vegetables can be out of the water when steaming. You can cover it with water if you desire. There are 18 panels that have holes in them and the panels open up to what ever size you want. A post in the middle has a ring. The post can be removed for larger vegetables but I never bother to remove mine. It has a ring on the top that you use to take the steamer from the pot. I don't find it very efficient for corn or potatoes.
Pros
It is simple to use and clean. It expands enough for a whole bag of cauliflower or broccoli. I also use this as a colander when washing vegetables.
It folds up like a flower for easy storage and I put it with my small bowls. I have also used it to hold small fruits on the counter. It is attractive and functional. I throw it in the dishwasher when I am finished with it. Or if just rinsing vegetables I just rinse, dry, store.
Has a five-year warranty. I have had mine for 4 years now and it is just like new.
Cons
The only thing I have found is the ring gets hot and at times I have forgotten to take the pot to the sink and just took it out of the pot with a pot holder and promptly some of the veggies fell out. The steamer almost goes straight out and unless you use another pot holder to keep the shape you get burned and lose your vegetables.
Final thoughts
This is an inexpensive and functional way to steam your food, especially if you dont want to bother with an electric steamer. The smart way to use it is to take the pot to the sink then lift the steamer out. Use caution because it does get hot. It also cools down quickly.
Thank you for reading my review.
