2.5 Stars
I had not originally planned to see this movie, because it seemed to be geared mainly to the tween set. Some of my family members decided to see it, so I went. The action of this movie starts almost immediately. Shortly in, we meet Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's character, a cab driver, who is having a pretty rough day. He acquires two young teenage passengers. Out of concern for his passengers, "The Rock" decides to check out their destination, and that is when the action begins. I really, really enjoy watching The Rock work, but I feel that he was misused for most of this movie. In this film, he is saddled with the typical "muscle" role. I believe he is capable of much more than that. I realize that this is a remake, but the movie was so typical and contrived. It was nice that The Rock atleast sort of had a love interest in Carla Gugino as Dr. Alex Friedman. One thing that I didn't like was the way they bring Carla's character back into the fold during the second half of the movie Her reintroduction could have been better written, and came off as sloppy. There were no surprises, and I felt like I just distracted myself from my every day life for a little while. At this point, studios should be able to add special touches to the originals, or completely forgo a remake.
