| cmaw63's Full Review: Radio City Suites/Apartments |
I was going to New York City and concerned about the high prices of hotels in "good" locations. I was even more concerned about the location of affordable hotels. I knew there had to be a nice hotel...in a great location...with reasonable rates. The problem was, I had to find it.
Location, Location, Location
Radio City Apartments is located at 142 West 49th Street. Out the door and to the right, within 1 to 2 blocks, you'll find NBC Studios, Rockefeller Plaza, Radio City Music Hall, and much more. Head the other way a few blocks and you'll be in Times Square or on Broadway.
Like to shop? 5th Avenue and all of it's gorgeous, and expensive, stores will make you shop till you drop! Tiffany & Co., Bulgari, Prada, and FAO Schwarz are a few of the names that will leave you breathless...and broke.
Subway and bus stops are steps from the front door of Radio City Apartments. Taxi's are available at all times and readily stop for passengers.
Price, Price, Price
After looking at several sites where the going price for a basic hotel room in Manhattan was $300 to $500 per night, I was amazed at the rate I got for a studio apartment at Radio City Apartments. A studio apartment with two double beds, kitchen, sitting area, and private bathroom was only $140/night. I booked 4 months in advance as I read that they filled up fast. I did notice after rechecking my reservation, a month before I was to visit NYC, that the rate had gone up to $170/night. Still reasonable!
There are one and two bedroom apartments available, also.
The Room
I was worried about the old saying "You get what you pay for". At the rate I paid for a central Manhattan location I was prepared for the worst. Instead, I got a clean, but dated, room that more than exceeded my expectations.
My studio apartment was one large room that had two double beds that were firm, but comfortable. No aches or pains when I woke up. (except for my poor feet that did more walking than they ever had) A dresser, open area for hanging clothes, and a nightstand were in this area. An iron and ironing board hung on the wall.
A sitting area, with a table and two chairs, was in one corner of the room. A small TV was bracketed to the wall, viewable from the table and beds. I wasn't concerned about the size of the television, as we were hardly ever in our room and when we were there we fell into our beds and started snoring.
The kitchen was a great plus to the room. An apartment sized refrigerator, microwave, stove/oven, coffee pot, and sink were all set into nice dark wood cabinets. Plates, silverware, and glasses for four were located in the cabinets. It saved us money by being able to refrigerate and heat leftovers from the restaurants we ate at.
The bathroom was the nicest part of the room. Tan, beige, and white marble tile gave it an air of elegance. It was a decent size with a tub/shower combo, pedestal sink, toilet, and mirror/medicine cabinet. A frosted glass window allowed light in. A small hairdryer was available. Radio City Apartments doesn't skimp on the towels either. We were left 4 to 6 thick, nice-sized towels each day, along with 4 hand towels (that were almost as large as my towels at home), and 2 washcloths. Water pressure in the shower about blew me out of the tub! It blasted the water out, so much so, that if I turned the knob for the shower more than half way it could get painful. In a couple of my showers the water did do the hot/cold dance, but in others I had a steady stream of hot water.
Maid service was daily and did a good job. She even washed our dirty dishes from the night before! That surprised us and for a while we felt guilty until we remembered we were on vacation and that did not include doing dishes!
The Staff
There was, usually, two young men at the desk at all times. While pleasant when I dealt with each of them, they did not go out of their way to interact with anyone. They would give a good morning, welcome back each time we left or entered the building then go back to reading a newspaper or playing a computer game. They did store our luggage our last day there while we explored Central Park, before leaving to go to the airport, for no extra charge.
Overall
Radio City Apartments gave us more than we could have hoped for at a price that was great on our budget. The room was dated, but clean and spacious. My sister and I are already planning another trip to NYC...we will be staying at Radio City Apartments again. For the person visiting NYC on a budget...or just wanting to stay in a decent hotel with a great location...this is the place to rest your weary feet every night!
