Radio Flyer is known for their legendary high quality wagons, ride-ons and rockers that are able to last for years and the Radio Flyer Classic Rock and Bounce Pony with Sound is no exception. Radio Flyer chose to upgrade their Radio Flyer Classic Rock and Bound Pony by adding a sound feature and increasing the "fun" value exponentially. My daughter received the pony as a gift from her grandparents and has loved every moment she has had playing with it.
The Radio Flyer Classic Rock and Bounce Pony is made up of a brown pony that is held onto a hard plastic red base with their patented rubber bounce suspension. The pony has a darker brown mane and a red and yellow saddle. The pony comes with a red removable plastic safety saddle in which a small child can sit in it to provide to support and keep them from falling. We do use the safety saddle for my daughter as she is only a year old and she fits securely in it without any rubbing of her skin or apparent discomfort. As she gets older and has better body control, we will be able to remove this safety saddle allowing her to have more freedom. We have no problem getting my daughter in and out of the safety saddle, unless she doesn't want to stop playing. Although the safety saddle provides this added security, I would not leave a child unattended while they are on it. The pony has a darling face and pretty blue eyes that my daughter loves to stare at and touch. The pony can be removed and is washable... every mom's favorite word! On top of the pony's head, there are two ears that make crinkly sounds when they are touched. My daughter is fascinated by this and likes to run her hands across them to make the sound.
The Radio Flyer Classic Rock and Bounce Pony measures 32 X 21 X 26 and weighs approximately 15 pounds. The pony is intended for a child who is 9 months old up through three years of age. The weight maximum for the pony is 45 pounds. Although it is a little bulky, it is still easy to transport from one room to another.
The rubber bounce suspension that connects the pony to the base is a patented piece from Radio Flyer that is a great improvement from the old spring systems. The rubber suspension allows for a smooth bounce motion as well movement in all directions. The rubber fits firmly onto the pony and base and does not allow any room for a small finger to get caught in. The rubber is made from strong and solid material and gives me the piece of mind that it will hold my daughter. One of the nicest features of the rubber bounce suspension is that when the pony is bouncing, it is quiet and does not make that creaking sound that so many other bouncers do. The tension of the rubber suspension perfectly blends a strong firm hold while allowing for a safe bounce even from a really young child such as a one year old. A beginner on the pony who is at the young end of the recommended spectrum may need some assistance on bouncing and rocking until they learn how to do it themselves.
The base of the Radio Flyer Classic Rock and Bounce Pony has a slight curve that allows for a rocking motion in addition to the bouncing. The curve is slight thereby making it near impossible to turn it over from rocking to hard. There are two handle grips on each side of the pony's head that are small enough for a young child to get a firm hold on. It took my daughter a few times on the pony to realize that she could hold onto these handles.
The only concern I have about the rocker is that when my daughter does start to rock it, it has a tendency to travel across the floor. I would highly recommend that this rocker be kept on flat ground away from stairs or items that could be pulled down and hurt a child. Although my daughter is not able to put a large amount of force into her rocking and creating only a small amount of movement, I anticipate her being able to increase the speed at which the rocker will move as she becomes bigger and stronger.
The sound feature that was added to the Classic Rock and Bounce Pony keeps my daughter fascinated. Not only does it sound as though the pony is neighing but is also make the clopping sound of hooves running on the ground. The tune of "Home On The Range" is also played by the pony. I have to admit that the song was cute the first few times, but it does get a little old after awhile. There are 3 volume settings available (off, low, high) in case of a phone call, television or a need for a break from all of the sound. 3 AA batteries are required for the sound feature and are not included with the initial purchase.
The pony was relatively easy to put together although I had to read through the directions a few times before I began. I feel that Radio Flyer could have done a better job with their instructions. The only part of the instillation I found to be difficult is that extra elbow grease is needed when attaching the rubber springs due to the firm fit.
The first time we placed my daughter on the pony, she enjoyed touching the pony's mane and tail. She did not use the handle grips because she did not realize that is what there are for. She was excited by this new experience and instinctively began to bounce. The amount of force she was bouncing with was small and did not create a large amount of motion but enough that she was aware of it. She was having a ball! As we continued to use the rocker, she became more animated on it and learned how to hold the hand grips. She quickly figured out that if she leaned forward and back, she was able to make it rock back and forth. We spend a little time each day on the pony and she has not shown any signs of boredom from playing with it. We have had the rocker for a few weeks now and are extremely satisfied with the pony and would recommend it.
