Pros:No smell, effective
The Bottom Line: Most effective ant traps - with no horrid smells!
Ants love our neighborhood - every spring to early summer I can count on them. They drive me crazy, they make me feel like my house is dirty, like they are sneaking into my food - the whole thing just really creeps me out. Last summer I tried sprays and goops and potions - not only did they not work, my house had that funky bug smell scent for days! GRRRR. Additionally, I have a child with Asthma and I did not want a smelly spray to be used if I could help it anymore. The spray leaves "stuff" all over the counters - the whole concept was not working for me. (I will use a spray when needed though - my current recommendation is also by Raid,

I just never believed in a bait trap - something you just put down and walk away. When the neighbor called the exterminator (I had visions of all her ants running next door to my house for safety!), I just knew I had to do something. On a whim I picked up a pack of Raid Ant Baits - one 4 pack for about $4, I figured what could it hurt at this point?
They come in a box (I found mine easily at Walmart) of 4 and inside are a these disc looking things - almost in a hexagon shape with an upraised central "house" and little open walkways in and out (6 total). In groups of 2, they are connected by a small by a small snap of plastic that breaks off easily.
Easy enough to use - just snap apart as you need them and place wherever! The packaging recommends using all 4 in the same location, but I've never used more than 2 in the same area. Just make sure you lay the trap flat and in a dry place (husband soaked a trap that was too close to the kitchen sink!) Right now I have 1 trap in my kitchen cupboard, 2 by the windowsill and sink, and 1 in the upstairs bathroom. Every place I found ants.
The box explains in pretty well .... "Kills the Queen, Kills the Colony". In theory there is something appealing to the ants so that they enter the trap, take a bit of the poisoned stuff and take it back to the colony and queen. I have to admit, there is a small part of me that flashes back to Disney's A Bugs Life, and feels a tiny bit of guilt. But it's "war" when the little buggers come into my house!
The packaging states : "Effective against pharaoh, argentine, cornfield and carpenter ants. Active ingredient: Chlorpyrifos 0.5%. Package of 4 child resistant bait discs. .24 oz."
I have to fight back to urge to squish all the ants - if they were coming in bunches before, once I lay out the traps they come in droves! I know the drill by now - a straight march to the trap, getting the bait, and a straight march back. After training myself to not be creeped out by it and forcing myself to not touch them, it's almost fun to watch. Yep, I coach them to the bait now ...
"Come on little anty, in the hole, no in the hole, no not over the trap, to the left, to the right, .... "
Yeah, I know. But since you don't really have to do anything but place the trap down, I want to feel like I am doing something.
Each day I see less and less ants - until they finally go away. The only gross part is they don't always take the bait and then crawl off somewhere quietly and out of the way to die. In my bathroom they all decided to stage a sit in and die off in my tub - so every morning I had to clean out dead ants bodies so I could shower. Again, I had to train my mind to think "No Kimm, this is not creepy ... " and then I was fine - and heck, at least the Raid Ant Baits were doing their job!
If I could change just one thing - having a sticky tab on the back might help? I have an oddly designed counter and I can't lay the traps flat on the path the ants take - I keep having visions of taping one to the wall as they march down!
This product is meant to kill ants - so clearly it is not safe for animals and children to have. I have 4 pets and a 4 year old - none of my traps are at their level. Otherwise we have never had an issue - no smell, no nothing. And since I am the one who solely has taken on this "war with the ants" I am really the only one using these traps and trying to manage them - and it's easy enough for me! The recommendation is to change the traps about every 3 months - for me typically the ants are long gone by then so I buy one 4 pack a year.
I do highly recommend the Raid Ant Baits to anyone wanting a safe, yet effective, ant solution.
