| pinkskittle's Full Review: Raid Ant Baits |
We have an ant situation. They only seem to like the kitchen and don't tend to wander further, which is nice. At first I tried washing everything down in the kitchen with vinegar. Then with bleach. They still kept coming back. I keep my kitchen clean, but my husband doesn't always remember not to leave tomato sauce chunks in the sink and my sister, who was visiting for a short while, didn't always remember to wash off her sugary tea stirring spoons when she was done with them.
Finally I convinced my husband to pick up some ant traps and he brought home Raid Ant Baits. He was averse to using a pesticide, but I had tried all the natural remedies (borax & sugar, cinnamon, black pepper, cayenne, vinegar, bleach, peppermint oil) but nothing worked. Something had to be done.
The baits came in a box of 4 small baits with holes in the sides for the ants to enter. Inside the baits is a chemical called Abamectin that the ants take back to their nest and queen to wipe them all out. Raid instructs to put out all 4 traps and to replace them every 3 months. This product is designed to kill carpenter and household ants.
Setting them up was super-easy. Just set them down where you see most of your ants. The undersides have paper you can peel away to reveal sticky stuff so you can stick the baits down. They wont contaminate your food products, or food preparation surfaces, dishes, kitchen utensils, or food containers. If you have pets or small children who like to stick things in their mouths, keep the baits off the floor and out of reach as you would any other poison.
Raid claims your ants will immediately eat the bait and that you will see fewer ants in days. Raid also guarantees it will kill off severe infestations.
Immediately after I put the baits down, the ants were not interested. You are supposed to leave your ants alone to eat the bat and take it to the nest. This was extremely hard for me. I couldn't bear to cook or wash dishes amongst those bugs. There are 3 of us in our house and not one of is saw an ant go into a bait. We'd see them poke their heads in and leave. When they would walk in a line to some granule of sugar left on our counter, I'd drop a bait right in their path. They weren't interested. After 5 days of waiting for something to happen, the ants just got worse. The started invading our cupboards (where dry food/cans are kept) instead of just hanging out on the counter. That's when I gave up. I got on some gloves, turned on the tap in the kitchen sink and started grabbing them up and washing them down the drain.
Our next step is to find a better-rated ant killing product, clear out our cupboards and caulk the crap out of our kitchen so they can't get in. Te only scary part is that it's possible they are nesting in our walls, floors, or within the wood of our cabinets, which could cause a lot of damage to our house.
I wasn't impressed at all with Rad Ant Baits, I didn't have the patience to give the ants more time to get interested in the baits. Even if it started working on the 6th day, a product designed to get rid of ants should not take that long!
update: my husband caulked nearly every crack and edge in our kitchen and we haven't seen any ants in days. Phew!
