| mcswarsik's Full Review: Raid Ant Baits |
My wife isn't afraid of spiders. Sometimes she'll let them be or have me capture and release them outside. We even had a bug on the wall that my daughter named fuzzy that became a pet for a few days. BUT..when we found the dozens of tiny ants scampering across the counter, it was war.
It was summer, after a period of no rain, and the little rascals must have invaded looking for moisture and food. They were coming up through the wall behind the sink. I also found them inside the cabinet where we keep our cereals and crackers.
My wife was freaking. She wanted to call an exterminator to bomb the house. Being the voice of reason and not wanting to have a poison fog bomb set off in our home that would cover everything, I said "let's first try some ant baits". Raid Ant Baits to be precise. I picked up a 4-Pack for $4.00. They are small white plastic hexagons, 2 1/4 inches wide and 1/2 inch high. The discs are joined (2 sets of 2) by a plastic bridge. They snap apart. There are holes in the side (that do not need to be opened) that lead to the powerful bait which is carried back to the nest to kill the queen and entire colony.
Easy to Use
1. Break discs apart
2. For best results, place discs by ant trails or close to areas where ants are numerous. Well, Duh!. You can even place them on kitchen countertops (which we did) and next to food and dishes.
3. Use all four discs (we only used two). Replace all discs every three months to keep ants from returning.
I put one Raid Ant Bait disc on the counter where the ants where hanging out and another under our lazy susan contraption. These ants were very very small characters but you could see a line of the little ground pounders charging into one of the six holes in the side of the bait disc and another line triumphantly marching out, carrying their spoils of war back to their queen. Hehehe...then we waited.
My wife likes to keep a clean kitchen and it almost killed her to leave the Raid Ant Bait with the lines of ants that looked like they were selling tickets to a $200 million Powerball lottery, on the counter for a day. I wanted to make sure the little buggers took enough back to wipe out the colony. After leaving it there for over 24 hours, I took it away, placing it under the sink for stragglers. I mopped up the existing ants on the counter with wet paper towels and caulked along the counter top to seal their invasion and egress routes.
I first heard of these things from my mother who used them to get rid of carpenter ants, those big black ants that make colonies in wood. We had them in our house and garage years ago and between Diazinon for the foraging grunts and these Raid Ant Baits for the rest I got rid of 'em. Every year I place these little discs of death around the perimeter of our home and in the garage.
Danger to pets and small children
Be careful if you have pets or small children as these do contain poison (Active Ingredient: Chlorpyritos [0,0diethyl 0-(3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridyl)phosphorothioate] whatever the hell that is???. When I placed them outside, I've found them chewed up by an animal trying to get at the bait inside. Again..Keep away from small children who may chew on them..I usually put a rock on it or wedge them so as to be hard to get at. Inside, I place them under cabinets or at the back.
Raid Ant Baits took care of those ants in our kitchen. They are convenient and easy to use. You put them down and a few months later just throw away. They work 24 hours a day. There is no smell or residue as in spays or powders. They are made by Raid, a trusted brand name. AND they kill the whole colony...
I know, wiping out a whole colony seems so....I mean after seeing the cartoon "Antz" with Woody Allen as the hero ant, I..Wait a minute...what am I talking about? They're bugs! And it was them or us. And if you saw the 50's sci-fi movie entitled "Them"...well, you know what ants can do...of course the ants in "Them" were 20 feet long and.....
Types of ants this stuff will whack
A variety of household ants, including Black Carpenter Ants, Argentine Ants, Cornfield Ants, and Pharaoh Ants and those really tiny things that tried to take over our kitchen
