The Bottom Line: What good does it do to kill some if they keep returning and rebuilding their nest. Find a product that is safe and hopefully more effective.
a little while. Like other people I am very intimidated by wasps, and particularly when they build their nest right on my porch, threatening my friends, family, pets and I, as we enter the house. My neighborhood is filled with these stinging )*(%^$#*&^*, so I drove off in a frenzy to find a spray that would kill them. I was hoping to find a product that would protect everyone but the wasps, but the store I went to did not have anything like that. I was desperate so purchased this Raid product.
If you are wondering what it is, let me describe from the packaging-it is a spray can like all/most and has a range of about 20 feet, and appears to hit where you aim (a definite plus). I'm in my 50's so definitely not using a ladder-feel too insecure, and dealing with stinging bugs, wouldn't risk a ladder anyway. I stood at the bottom of my porch stairs, and aimed at the wasps ambling around and the nest. It is supposed to kill all of the babies in the nest and also claims to work after the fact.
Ingredients are a base of various petroleum products and Tetramethrin, Methylpropenyl and Phenoxyphenyl. There are miscellaneous and sundry other products, and some they may not mention. Am I comfortable with the ingredients. NO! I am not.
They suggest you use after dark, when the wasps are returning to the nest, soak the entire nest. They recommend being far away from the nest, yet peer closely inside to ensure all are dead. Uh, yeah. Far away, yet peering way inside? I don't think so. I advise standing several feet away, soak completely, zap any in the area, but not close to you. Wait a couple of days and do the whole routine again.
Ta da! You want to know if it worked. Yes and no.
It appeared to work initially. Rezapping them a couple of days later, and then again worked! Yay for me, and the fam.
Does it work on yellow jackets? Dunno. Don't have any.
Did I get rid of the wasps forever? Absolutely not!
They built a new nest close by (still on the porch/roof overhang). Did the same routine on that. Same outcome. Fine initially. Back again further away from the porch, but back with a vengeance. I drowned them after spraying. Gone again, back again.
Not using this poisonous stuff again, and not recommending you do. Ineffective and what does it do ultimately to the humans and pets? I don't know and and not taking the risk. I work for a cancer center. Too many unknowns.
Off to a home center that has orange spray or the like to kill these wasps hopefully.
By the way, noone to the best of my knowledge has been stung by these wasps. My neighborhood is covered. Everyone is upset, but I haven't heard of anyone being stung. It still makes me very nervous.
I suggest getting something that at least seems to be non-toxic, and read directions carefully, ensure pets, kids, people not around. Don't upset wasps or yellow jackets.
