| shoplmart's Full Review: Rain-X Glass Treatment and Cleaner |
I purchased Rain-X Glass Treatment in hopes that it would improve visibility when driving in heavy downpours and heavy snow. When I first used this product I was living in extreme Northern California; where the winter rains can create blinding driving conditions. Did this product meet my expectations?
The Product:
Rain-X Glass Treatment is a clear, alcohol based solution that can be applied to all vehicle's and their exterior windows via a paper towel or terry cloth. Rain-X Glass Treatment comes in a variety of sizes, ranging from 3.5 fl. oz. to 16 fl. oz. (the 16oz is a spray version as shown). According to the Rain-X Company, this product is formulated with a polymer that fills the microscopic pores of glass with hydrophobic molecules. The end result is an invisible shield that forces rain, sleet, and snow to bead-up and roll off of your windows. As far as I know, Rain-X Original Glass Treatment can be used on all types of clear glass and even rear view mirrors. This product should not, however, be used on any types of plastics.
My Experience:
In the Rain:
I was extremely impressed after I used Rain-X Glass Treatment. Shortly after I applied Rain-X to my windshield, California received a number of large storm systems. During these heavy rains, Rain-X Original Glass Treatment worked exactly the way it claimed it would on the bottle. For example, when driving in these heavy rains, the rain beaded off my windows just as rapidly as it hit. The result was improved visibility that far surpassed the results I got when just using my windshield wipers.
Though not advised in extreme rain, when Rain-X is applied, you can literally drive without your windshield wipers on the freeway and still see adequately.
Note: It takes a certain amount of air movement to move the rain droplets off of your windshield, So you will probably notice better results driving on the freeway versus driving in town.
Sleet/Snow/Mix
This product works equally as well in these types of conditions. When sleet or snow hits your windshield it is quickly swiped away with the combination of Rain-X and wind velocity. I would definitely recommend this product for those living in an area where snowstorms are common place.
In addition to aiding in poor weather driving, Rain-X also does a great job of removing all kinds of bugs and bird droppings in the summer months. While these types of pests don't bead up and fly off your windshield like rain and snow (how I wish), this product does make it a whole lot easier to remove bugs via your windshield washer system.
A big problem I have had using generic versions of this product are the hazy streaks that are left on my windshield. With the Rain-X brand Original Treatment I always get a streak-free windshield after application.
Ease of use:
This product is simple to apply. To apply, you simply saturate a dry cloth or paper towel with this product and apply it the exterior of your windows; it's almost impossible to mess up. I usually apply two coats for longer lasting results. One should note that the more you use your windshield wipers the quicker this product needs to be reapplied. However, this product still should last on your windshield for at least a week no matter how much you use your windshield wipers/wiper fluid.
How long does it last?
This all depends. In the summer or if it doesn't rain very much, I can usually apply one coat and it will last the entire season. In winter, however, I will need to apply this product every two-three weeks for optimal results. One 16 oz. Bottle usually lasts me the entire year or more. At $8.99 per year this Rain-X Glass Treatment is very affordable.
Price and Availability:
Rain-X Glass Treatment is widely available. This product can be purchased at almost any large discount or automotive store. The product runs for about $2.99 for the 3.5 fl. oz bottle to $8.99 for the 16oz. Spray.
Final Thoughts:
Although many products have tried to compete, not one of these products works nearly as well as the original Rain-X Glass Treatment. I recommend this product 100% for anyone who wants clearer vision when driving in inclimate weather. In closing, I will continue to use this product until something better comes to market.
